2011 ASB Classic: Greta Arn wins the crown in Auckland
The 31-year-old Greta Arn won the final of the 2011 ASB Classic Women’s singles tournament on Saturday. The right hander thrashed out last year’s winner Yanina Wickmayer in two sets to pick up the second WTA singles title of her
career. The final match score was 6-3, 6-3.
"I feel unbelievable. I am so happy; I do not even know what to say. My dream come true. I just tried to do my thing. I played my tennis and took it one ball after another. I wanted to move her around because she had a tough match
yesterday; she looks fit to me, but it seemed to work today. I will definitely be coming back to Auckland next year,” said Greta after the match.
The Hungarian, who made her debut on the WTA tour back in 1997, had a dream week in Auckland as she made her way into the finals, overpowering four seeds on the way. She also got the better of competition’s number one seed Maria
Sharapova of Russia in the quarterfinal stage.
Greta originally came to Auckland to take part in the qualifying rounds, however, she earned direct entry into the main draw as a result of several withdrawals.
In her today’s title victory over Yanina, Greta played some impressive tennis and served strongly to emerge victorious in the end.
"Greta played well. She did what she had to do, so congratulations to her.  She has a different game from the other players. I made way too many mistakes. It was not my day, but there will be many more to come,” reflected Yanina
after losing the title battle.
Arn who grabbed her first WTA career singles title at Estroil back in 2007 now stands at 2-0 in the finals. As a result of this victory, the Hungarian will now jump to number 81 in the world on Monday.
Meanwhile, in the doubles action, Katarina Srebotnik and Kveta Peschke picked up the doubles crown after thrashing out Marina Erakovic and Arvidsson in two sets. The final score line was 6-3, 6-0. The battle concluded in a time
period of fifty one minutes.
