2011 ASB Classic: Latest happenings from the court
Shuai Peng reaches semis
The 24-year-old Shuai Peng of China triumphed in the quarterfinal match of the 2011 ASB Classic competition after getting the better of Great Britain’s Heather Watson in two sets on Thursday. The final match score was 6-4, 7-5.
As a result of Peng’s victory, Watson’s tournament run in Auckland also came to an end. The right hander posted her career best result at the event by reaching the quarters before eventually bundling out of the competition.
The third highest ranked Brit on the WTA tour, by virtue of her quarterfinal appearance, is likely to crack the top 150 next week in the rankings list. She is currently placed at number 176 in the South African Airways WTA list.
Yanina Wickmayer defeats Simona Halep
Last year’s winner Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium who enters Auckland this time as a second seed player dispatched off her Romanian foe Simona Halep in straight sets to make her way into the semis. The final score line was 6-0 6-2.
The right hander while commenting on her current run of form after the match reflected, "I feel very happy, this is the first week of the year and I am really happy to be playing well. I am in the semis so I guess this tournament
is lucky for me."
Top seed Maria Sharapova stunned by Greta Arn
The former number one Russian, Maria Sharapova was upset by Greta Arn in two set shocker. The final match score was 6-2 7-5. The battle concluded in a time period of ninety one minutes.
“I started off really slow, got down two breaks and I think she gained a tremendous amount of confidence from that.  I had my chances in the second set but I did not play the same way I had played to get there. Obviously I would
have loved to play a few more here and be the winner, but that is the way it goes. You look forward to the next one,” said the Russian after her defeat.
Sharapova committed a total of thirty unforced errors against her Hungarian foe on Thursday before eventually bundling out of the event. She blasted three double-faults in her loss against the 31-year-old Greta.
