2011 ASB Classic competition: Marina Erakovic sent packing by Elena Vesnina
The professional tennis ace from New Zealand Marina Erakovic bundled out of the 2011 ASB Classic competition after falling in two sets at the hands of Elena Vesnina of Russia on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-2, 6-2. The
battle lasted for a time period of one hour and four minutes.
The 22-year-old Marina, who turned pro back in 2005 on the WTA tour, was playing in her first competitive clash since last October. Elena not only posted a straight set victory over the Kiwi player but also completely dominated
her throughout the match, which was a huge let down for Marina.
Marina recorded her career best result at the ASB Classic back in 2008 where she made her way into the semis before eventually losing to Aravane Rezai in two sets. The final match score was 6–3, 7–5. Her current form however, raises
doubts in everyone’s mind that whether she will be able to come back inside the top fifty in the world or not.
The New Zealander achieved her career highest ranking of number 49 back in 2008. After breaking her opponent’s game to earn a lead of 2-1 in her today’s match, Marina lost every other game afterwards in the set.
The right hander committed a couple of unforced errors in her attempt to hit the winners down the line throughout the match. The decisive set also did not change the story for the Auckland resident who disappointed her home crowd
badly as a result of her straight set loss over the Russia.
She came into the competition on the back of a wrist injury and there were already speculations about whether she would be able to compete at the ASB Classic or not.
Elena Vesnina, on the other hand, while commenting on the match after her victory said, "The match was very close, don't look at the score.  It was a very tough match; she is a very difficult player.  I have known her for a long
time and in our previous match she beat me."
In other action on Tuesday, Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro got the better of Romina Oprandi in two sets. The final score line was 6-3, 7-6. As a result of this victory, Carla will take on Heather Watson in the next round.
