2011 Abierto Mexicano Telcel: Albert Montanes thrashes Daniel Gimeno-Traver
World No. 25 Albert Montanes of Spain decimated his compatriot, World No. 59 Daniel Gimeno-Traver in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the 2011 Abierto Mexicano Telcel. The match, held in Acapulco, was over in an hour and eight minutes.
The first set of the match was comparatively more competitive than the second, although both were easy wins for Montanes. Although Gimeno-Traver scored the only ace in the set, he also committed two double faults and failed to convert four of five break
points.
On the other side of the court, Montanes managed to break his fellow countryman thrice; he also took away 61 percent of the total points to win the set 6-2.
With the first set lost, Gimeno-Traver seemed to lose his confidence and played a mediocre game for the remainder of the match. Montanes, who is 30 years old, defeated the player with two aces and just one double fault in the second set.
The success records Montanes’s third victory over Gimeno-Traver, bringing their head-to-head record to 3-1 for the Spanish World No. 25. The two players had their first meeting at the same venue, competing on the red courts of the 2009 Abierto Mexicano Telcel
in Acapulco. Gimeno-Traver managed to defeat Montanes in two closely contested sets 7-6(5), 7-6(5).
Their next meeting was at the same venue in 2010, when they met in the round of the last 32 in Acapulco; Montanes emerged successful in three sets, winning the match 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. Montanes and Gimeno-Traver had their latest match in 2010, in the round of
the last 16 at the Estoril event in Portugal. Montanes recorded an easy win over his opponent winning the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Their head-to-head record shows a pattern of gradual but definite improvement on Montanes’ part; he has only been defeated by Gimeno-Traver once, and every single match has yielded better results.
Albert Montanes, who is seeded fifth at the Acapulco tournament, will now compete against Columbian main-draw participant Santiago Giraldo. Giraldo defeated Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three sets in the first round of the tournament, ousting
the player from a set down. He won the match 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
