2011 Australian Age Championships: Day Five - Girl’s events
Final day of the 2011 Australian Age Championships concluded after its last session at the Swimming Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on April 23.
The session initiated with the 17-18 years' 200m butterfly, where Nicole Mee proved her eligibility for the gold crown, clocking a time of 2:13.70 minutes. Her time was 0.46 seconds under the last year’s titleholder, Amy Levings, who clocked 2:14.16 minutes.
Hunter’s Leah Bird and Peters Western’s Melanie Bath followed her on the podium for the silver and bronze medal in 2:14.85 and 2:16.39 minutes.
Next was the 800m freestyle event, where 16-year-old Mikkayla Sheridan earned the top position in a time of 8:42.48 minutes. Like Mee, her time was comfortably under the last year’s champion, Amy Allen, who earned the gold medal in 8:51.42 minutes. Sheridan
was followed by Laura Crockart and Dahlas Rogers, who touched the wall in 8:43.78 and 8:58.46 minutes.
Moments later, Carla Buchanan of Acacia Bayside dominated the 15-year-olds 200m IM. Buchanan clocked a remarkable 2:18.05 minutes for the gold medal and was followed by Tianni Gilmour and Hayley Baker in 2:18.62 and 2:19.89 minutes.
After few minutes, 14-year-old Ami Matsuo displayed her terrific skills in the 200m freestyle. She touched the wall for gold medal in 2:01.22 minutes and was 0.12 seconds under the last year’s champion, Yolane Kukla’s 2:01.34 minutes. Fairweather of Kawana
Waters’s and Brittany McEvoy of Southport followed her on the podium for the silver and bronze medal, posting a time of 2:01.88 and 2:04.02 minutes.
Subsequently, 13-year-old Amy Forrester of Clayfield Aquatic earned the crown for 100m back-stroke. She clocked a time of 1:04.61 minutes ahead of the Pamplone and Ashleigh Brown, who climbed the podium for the silver and bronze medal in 1:05.58 and 1:06.04
minutes.
The last event of the session was 17-18 years' 100m freestyle, where Jessica Morrison claimed the gold crown in 55.61 minutes. Tessa Wallace and Skye Cater followed her on the podium with a timing of 55.62 and 56.64 minutes.
The championship is considered a successful event, as various Australian records have been improved in these six days. While, their enhanced performances projects the standing of Swimming Australia at international age group level.
