2011 Australian Goldfields Open qualifiers at World Snooker Academy in Sheffield: Day 1 results
First day of the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open qualifying session brought mixed fortunes for World Snooker Qualifying School (Q School) tour card winners. However, most of them moved to the second
round qualification, as for the rest, they failed to make the cut on Monday, June 27 at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield.
Some of the most interesting matches on Day 1 include Sam Baird vs Luca Brecel, Robin Hull vs Dechawat Poomjaeng, James Wattana vs Daniel Wells, Ben Woollaston vs Adam Duffy, and Scott Mackezie vs
Stuart Carrington.
The experienced Sam Baird was up against Belgian youngster, Luca Brecel, in his opening qualifier. Baird defeated Brecel 5-1 with decent breaks of 74, 97, 73 and 68 to storm into next round of qualifying
session against Adrian Gunnell. Q School tour ticket holder, Robin Hull, played outstandingly and thrashed Poomjaeng, 5-1 with relative ease. He fired superb knocks of 136, 53 and 91.
The Welsh National Champion, Daniel Wells had to face a 2-5 defeat at the hands of veteran James Wattana on Day 1. Wattana’s experience triumphed over Wells’ amateur game-play easily, and the former
set up a Matthew Couch clash in the second round.
Ben Woollaston married Tatiana a couple of weeks ago in Pinsk and came back with hopes to book a spot in the Last-32 stage of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open. He has taken one step ahead towards his
goal, beating Q School pro player, Adam Duffy by 5-2 in the first qualifier. Woollaston will go head-to-head against Ian McCulloch of England in round two.
Stuart Carrington grabbed his debut main tour card in the eventual Q School event and entered the 2011-12 Snooker Season with high aims. Unfortunately for him, he crashed out in the first round of
Players Tour Championship (PTC) Event 1 and faced the same music in 2011 Australian Goldfields Open qualifiers. He was beaten by the Scotsman, Scott Mackenzie 2-5 at academy arena.
