2011 Australian Open: A look at the first round qualifiers in the men’s draw
A number of professionals made it through to the second round of the 2011 Australian Open in the men's singles category. Amongst the triumphant few was the eighth seed, Andy Roddick of America. Roddick went head-to-head with Jan
Hajek of the Czech Republic, defeating him 6-1 in the first set, 6-2 in the second set and 6-2 in the third set to advance to the next round. Andy will now be opposed by Igor Kunitsyn in the second round.
On the contrary, Russia's Teymuraz Gabashvili was eliminated from the tournament after having lost to Swiss man Stanislas Wawrinka. Gabashvili was beaten 7-6, 6-4 and 6-4 in straight sets to be sent home. Wawrinka will face Bulgaria's
Grigor Dimitrov in the second round of his draw.
Seeded 26th in the tournament, Argentina's Juan Monaco will be going head-to-head with Robin Haase of the Netherlands in the second round. Monaco made it through upon defeating Germany's Simon Greul 7-6, 7-6 and 6-2.
Meanwhile, Haase got rid of Argentinean Carlos Berlocq beating him 6-4, 6-3 and 7-6.
Meanwhile, Spaniard Nicolas Almagro ended Frenchman Stephane Robert's reign, defeating him 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 and 7-5. Almagro will be opposed by Russia's Igor Andreev in the next round. Andreev annihilated Italy's Filippo Volandri
winning the first set 6-3, the second set 7-6 and the decisive third set 6-3.
Wild card entrant and Frenchman Benoit Paire made it through to the second round after having beaten Italian Flavio Cipolla 6-1, 7-5 and 6-1 in the first round match played between the two. Paire will be facing Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic
in the following round. The Croatian got past Briton Peter Luczak defeating him 6-3, 6-3 and 7-6.
Amongst the likes of the French tennis players was also Nicolas Mahut. Mahut will be opposed by the 29th seed, Viktor Troicki of Serbia. Nicolas defeated Argentina's Brian Dabul 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4 to be put through to
the next round. Troicki, on the other hand, battled it out against Russia's Dmitry Tursunov to make it through. The Russian was beaten 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 and 6-0 to be knocked out of the tournament.
