2011 Australian Open: Novak Djokovic clinches men's singles title
Seeded third at the 2011 Australian Open, Novak Djokovic of Serbia took down Briton Andy Murray in straight sets to clinch the championship title. Djokovic got off to a good start, initiating the match with a 6-4 win in the first
set. On the other hand, Murray did not seem to have much to offer as Nole went on to take the second set 6-2, following it up with a win in the deciding third set, 6-3, to upset Andy.
"Of course it's not easy. You could see his [Murray's] struggle and frustrations tonight because he had chances to win a first grand slam trophy. Every time you get there you want to win it badly but some things go wrong. You're
thinking too much. You're worrying too much in your head. It's a mental battle, definitely. Bottom line is that this is a very mental sport in the end. Everybody is very fit. But it's a learning process, I guess. It wasn't easy for me either. I know how he
feels ... he's still young. I'm sure he's gonna have more chances to win it," said Djokovic.
Earlier, Djokovic battled it out against the Swiss maestro, Roger Federer in the semifinals of the 2011 Australian Open. Djokovic seemed to have been on fire right from the onset, as the Serb took the first set 7-6, the second
set 7-5 and finally the third set 6-4 to make a place for himself in the championship final and send Federer home. Meanwhile, Murray went head-to-head with Spain’s David Ferrer. Although, the Spaniard won the first set 6-4, David seemed to have lost his spark
as he lost the second set 6-7, the third set 1-6 and the fourth set 6-7 to be eliminated from the tournament.
Moreover, as Murray's hopes of becoming the first Englishman in over 75 years to clinch a grand slam title were crushed, the professional stated, "You know, it was obviously tough, disappointing. I thought Novak played unbelievably
well and yeah, it's tough, but I've got to deal with it. I was in a much worse state last year than I was this year. I don't know why. I'll see what I do from here, you know. I don't know, I might not play for a few months, I might feel like playing in a week's
time. It depends -- see how I feel."
