2011 BMW Malaysian Open: Jarmila Groth, Bojana Jovanovski clear first round
Jarmila Groth defeats Shengnan Sun in consecutive sets 7-6(2), 6-3
Australian tennis player Jarmila Groth managed to defeat Shengnan Sun of China in straight sets in the first round of the 2011 BMW Malaysian Open, scoring a victory over her opponent in just under an hour and thirty minutes.
Groth, who is currently World Number 31 on the Women’s Tennis Association [WTA] rankings, faced some difficulty in the first set. She struggled to keep her momentum, converting one break point of four against Sun and failing to defend a solitary break point
from the Chinese pro. She scored five aces throughout the match, two more than the amount scored by Sun. Groth won the set at the end of a tie-breaking game, scoring 55 percent of the total points. The scoreline at this point was 7-6(2).
The second set was much easier for Groth. Not only was her confidence bolstered by the first set, but Sun also seemed exhausted after the first thirteen games. The Australian player, who is 23 years old, scored three aces and broke Sun twice. Although Sun
managed to fight off four break points, she won eight points less than Groth during the set. The Australian pro took away the match 7-6(2), 6-3.
Jarmila Groth will compete against Japanese tennis pro Misaki Doi in the second set. Doi defeated Ukrainian tennis pro and qualifier Tetiana Luzhanska in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to secure a spot in the second round of the Malaysian tournament.
Bojana Jovanovski ousts Tamarine Tanasugarn in straight sets 6-0, 6-1
Serbian tennis player and World Number 55 Bojana Jovanovski scored an easy victory over local player Tamarine Tanasugarn in straight sets at the 2011 BMW Malaysian Open, winning the first round match 6-0, 6-1. This is the shortest match yet played at the
tournament, lasting just a little over 42 minutes.
The match was an exceptionally easy victory for the Serbian pro, who is 19 years old. She scored four aces against her 33-year-old opponent, and did not commit a single double fault during the match. Jovanovski also converted five of seven break points against
Tanasugarn successfully. The match consisted of a total of thirteen games. Jovanovski won the match with a bagel and a fry, taking away a whopping seventy percent of the total points in the match. Tanasugarn could only score a total of 19 points.
Bojana Jovanvoski will now compete against wild card Urszula Radwanska from Poland in the next round. Radwanska defeated unseeded pro Junri Namigata 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the match to secure a second-round spot for herself.
