2011 BNP Paribas Open: ATP Seeds Part VIII
World Number 8 Andy Roddick
Andy Roddick is currently the highest ranked American tennis player on the Association of Tennis Professionals, and has stayed in the Top Ten for most of his career on tour. He began playing in a professional capacity in 2000,
and is currently coached by Larry Stefanki. The pro is 28 years old.
Roddick has been seeded eighth at the ongoing 2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells event. He has been participating at the event since 2003, and has not missed one edition of the tournament since then.
His debut at the event was an exceptional one. In 2003, the event was known as the ATP Masters Series Indian Wells and consisted of 64 main-draw participants. Unlike most players, Roddick was already World Number 6 when he made
his first appearance on the hard courts of California. The tournament did not award byes in the first round at that time, so Roddick kicked off his campaign with a straight-sets victory against Swede Thomas Enqvist. He then took on Spaniard Feliciano Lopez,
defeating the player in straight sets once again. Roddick’s third round match was against French pro and then-World Number 11 Sebastien Grosjean, whom he defeated in three sets. Rainer Schuettler, who was World Number 15 at that time, defeated Roddick in the
quarterfinals in straight sets.
Roddick repeated this performance next year as World Number 3, toppling the opposition to reach the quarterfinal against then-World Number 10 Tim Henman. The Briton successfully ended his 2004 run in three sets. In the next edition
of the event, Roddick improved his results by making it past the quarterfinals into the semis before suffering a defeat at the hands of Lleyton Hewitt of Australia.
His worst performance at the event was in 2008, when he was once again ranked World Number 6. He received a bye in the first round, but was upset by Germany’s Tommy Haas in straight sets in the next round. Haas was ranked 30 spots
lower than Roddick at that time.
In 2009, Andy Roddick posted great results at the tournament. Ranked 7th in the world, he defeated players such as David Ferrer and Novak Djokovic to make it to the semi-finals of the event. He was ousted by top player
Rafael Nadal at this stage. However, his most spectacular performance was in 2010, when he retained his current ranking. The American player ousted players Yen-Hsun Lu, Thiemo de Bakker, Jurgen Melzer, Tommy Robredo and Robin Soderling to reach his first final
at the event. He was ousted by Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia.
Andy Roddick has performed quite well so far this year, reaching the title match at the Brisbane International and the fourth round at the Australian Open. He also won his latest tournament at Memphis, defeating Canadian wild card
Milos Raonic to take the title. After this, he helped lead America to a win against Chile at the first round of the Davis Cup. He is expected to reach the quarterfinals at Indian Wells at the very least.
