2011 BNP Paribas Open – ATP Seeds Part XIX: Tommy Robredo
World Number 28 Tommy Robredo
Tennis pro and current World number 28 Tommy Robredo is one of seven Spanish tennis players ranked in the World’s Top 30 players by the Association of Tennis Professionals. Robredo is currently 28 years old, and has been playing
tennis on a professional level since 1998. He has spent almost thirteen years on the ATP Tour circuit.
Robredo broke into the World’s Top Ten players in 2006, setting a career-high record at World Number 5. He achieved this after scoring a title at the Hamburg Masters that year. The Spanish pro began his career with popular coach
Jose Manuel “Pepo” Clavet, but is currently coached by Salvador Navarro and Karim Perona. He is best-known for his strong forehand, and clay is his best surface.
This year, Tommy Robredo is participating at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open as a seeded player. This is the tenth time that he will be taking part in the tournament, and the seventh time that he is playing as one of the top 32 seeds.
Robredo made his debut on the California courts in 2002 as World Number 34, playing against then-World Number 11 Tim Henman in his first round match. He was defeated in three sets. This was, however, the first and only time that
he has been ousted in the first round.
In 2009, Robredo was ranked World Number 15. Seeded at the tournament once again, he received a bye in the first round and faced Russian pro Igor Kunitsyn in his opening match. He defeated the player and went on to defeat then-World
Number 19 Marin Cilic of Croatia in straight sets. His run ended in the fourth round, when he retired during a match against World Number 5 Andy Murray.
Robredo took part in the 2011 BNP Paribas Open as a seeded player again, despite the fact that his ranking had slipped to World Number 23. He defeaed Sergiy Stakhovsky in his opening match, and went on to undo Dudi Sela of Israel
and Cypriot Marcus Baghdatis in the next two rounds. He was ousted by American Number 1 Andy Roddick in straight sets at the quarterfinal.
This year, Tommy Robredo is seeded 25th at the 2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells. He received a bye in the first round of the event, and proceeded directly to his first match against Germany player Mischa
Zverev. The Spanish pro ousted his opponent in three sets, and moved on to the next round against qualifier Donald Young. The American player scored an easy victory over fifth seed Andy Murray, but could not repeat the result against Robredo. The Spaniard
pro scored a straight-sets victory over Young, winning with a bagel in the first round.
Robredo’s success at the tournament has led him to set up a fourth round match against American 21st seed Sam Querrey, who bested World Number 9 Fernando Verdasco to reach this round.
