2011 BNP Paribas Open – ATP Seeds Part XVII: Sam Querrey
World Number 24 Sam Querrey is one of the highest-ranked American tennis players on the Association of Tennis Professionals these days. At the end of this January, he was ranked as high as World Number 17. Despite the fact that
his ranking has slipped over the past month or so, Querrey was seeded 21st at the 2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells.
The California native is currently 23 years old, and turned pro in 2006. He has been part of the professional circuit for almost five years now. At 6ft-6in, Querrey is one of the tallest players on the ATP. His height gives him
a distinct advantage over many other players, and his serve and strong forehand are much more effective due to this asset. He is coached by David Nainkin.
Sam Querrey made his Indian Wells debut in 2006, when he was ranked World Number 443. Despite his low ranking, he managed to defeat compatriot Bobby Reynolds in the first round before falling to then-World Number 14 James Blake
in the next one. Querrey repeated this performance in 2007, although he was ranked much higher as World Number 67 at the time. He defeated Belgian player Christopher Rochus in the first round, but fell to then-World Number 4 Nikolay Davydenko in the second
round. In 2008, the American was ranked World Number 48 in March and managed to oust Luis Horna in the first round, before being defeated by Australian former World Number 1 Lleyton Hewitt.
In 2009, Querrey was ranked World Number 49. He began his Indian Wells campaign by defeating then-World Number 71 Guillermo Canas in straight sets. He went on to upset Czech tennis pro Radek Stepanek in the second round, but was
defeated by Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka in the third.
Last year in 2010, the American player was ranked World Number 22. He was seeded for the first time at the Indian Wells, and received a bye in the first round. He managed to score a victory over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in the second
round, but was ousted by compatriot and frequent doubles partner John Isner in the third round.
Although the American had been unable to make it past the third round at Indian Wells in his past five efforts, his luck seems to have changed at this year’s tournament. He defeated players Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia and ninth
seed Fernando Verdasco to set up a fourth round match against Spanish tennis player and 25th seed Tommy Robredo, who defeated Mischa Zverev and Donald Young in the earlier rounds of the tournament. The winner of their match will take part in the
quarterfinals of the Indian Wells tournament.
