2011 BNP Paribas Open – ATP Seeds Part XX: Philipp Kohlschreiber
World Number 35 Philipp Kohlschreiber
German tennis pro Philipp Kohlschreiber concludes this series as the last seed at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open. The tennis pro is currently ranked World Number 35, and qualified as a top player for the tournament due to three higher-ranked
players dropping out as a consequence of injuries.
Philipp Kohlschreiber has been playing professional tennis since 2001, and has spent more than ten years on the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour circuit. The player, who is 27 years old, reached his career-high ranked of
World Number 22 in 2009. The right-handed player has won two career titles in the course of his career, and he is currently coached by Miles Maclagan. The tennis pro is sponsored by Wilson.
The German player made his debut at the Indian Wells tournament in 2006, when he was ranked World Number 94. His first-round opponent was Florent Serra of France, whom he ousted in three sets. Kohlschreiber marked another significant
victory in the second round, defeating current Top Ten player David Ferrer in straight sets. The German’s run ended in the third round, when Finnish pro Jarkko Nieminen defeated him in three sets.
Kohlschreiber has only participated in the tournament as a seeded player twice before, although this is his sixth showing at Indian Wells. The first time he was seeded was in 2008, when he was ranked World Number 27. The player
received a bye in the first round, and defeated Belgian pro Xavier Malisse in his opening match to proceed to the third round. He was defeated by World Number 3 Novak Djokovic.
In 2009, the German pro was ranked World Number 36. He was unseeded at Indian Wells, and faced French pro Julien Benneteau in the first round. He defeated the player to set up a second round match against Olivier Patience, whom
he defeated in three sets. His next match was against Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador, who took one of three sets before conceding the match. His run at the tournament was ended in the fourth round, where he faced World Number 9 Fernando Verdasco.
His last showing at the tournament in 2010 was, once again, as a seeded player. He received a bye in the first round, and defeated compatriot Philipp Petzschner in the second round. He was ousted by then-World Number 2 Novak Djokovic
in the third round.
This year, the German pro began his campaign by ousting American qualifier Tim Smyczek in the second round. He went on to score a straight sets victory over fourth seed Robin Soderling, and will now compete against 2009 US Open
champion Juan Martin Del Potro in the fourth round of the tournament today.
