2011 BNP Paribas Open: Tommy Robredo makes it into the Quarter-finals
Spaniard Tommy Robredo defeated America’s Sam Querrey in the fourth round at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday night. The Spaniard wrapped up his straight sets victory with a breadstick in the first set, registering a 6-1, 6-3
score.
BNP Paribas Open is starring 96 players. The top 32 players were given a bye into the second round, while the “leftovers” had to fight it out for the remaining spots.
The match was a wonderful display of sheer class and domination form the 28-year-old Spaniard. Robredo took hold of the contest from the very first serve game and put a lot of excitement in the match. Although, he showed some lack
of accuracy in the first serve, he made up for it later by dominating all other statistics of the match.
Ranked 28th in the world, Robredo dismantled Querrey’s dreams of a title win. World number 24th, Querrey on the other hand, showed no eagerness and won only four games in the match. He also double faulted six times in the first
set giving the match away. Robredo saved 100 per cent of his break points as compared to Querrey’s 67 per cent.
The first set saw Robredo landing in 54 per cent of his first serves compared to his opponent’s 39 per cent. He was also prominently better at converting serves into points without facing any break points, winning 86 per cent of
his points as opposed to Querrey’s 62 per cent. The first set was an easy victory for the Spaniard as he clinched the set with a breadstick.
In the final set, Robredo maintained his winning streak with his impressive abilities and skills. However, this time he faced resistance from his opponent. Even though Querrey registered a higher first serve percentage and saved
one break point, he did not manage to win the set. On the contrary, Robredo fired an ace and registered a slightly lower 65 per cent win on his first serve to win the match convincingly, securing a 6-3 win in the second set.
Spaniard is now set to face Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, who defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6(3), 7-6(7). This will be their 3rd meeting on court having met at Roland Garros and ATP Masters Series Madrid. Robredo has a
poor 0-2 head-to-head record with Argentine’s obvious dominion. But nonetheless Spaniard is carrying his winning momentum all the way from the first match to the third round of this tournament.
