2011 BNP Paribas Open: Women’s Tennis Association seeds Part IX
The 2011 BNP Paribas Open will begin today, as the WTA players take to the court for the first round of the event. Here is a continuation of the review of the top seeds in the tournament.
World Number 19 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Russian tennis pro Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is seeded seventeenth at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open, an event in which she took part in both 2009 and 2010. She performed admirably in 2009, upsetting World Number 3 Jelena Jankovic in straight sets in the second
round of the event. She went on to defeat players such as Karin Knapp and Nuria Llagostera Vives to qualify for the quarterfinals of the event. Here, she scored another straight-sets victory over seventh seed Agnieszka Radwanska. She made it to the semi-finals
of the tournament, where she was defeated by Serbian tennis pro and defending champion Ana Ivanovic.
Unfortunately, the Russian player could not replicate this result in 2010. She was ousted in the third round of the 2010 BNP Paribas Open.
However, Pavlyuchenkova is seeded ninth at the tournament and has a good chance of delivering results. She recently played in the Dubai tournament after winning the qualifying round, but compatriot Alisa Kleybanova managed to oust him in a tie-breaking match
of three sets. Although this performance was quite unsatisfactory, she redeemed herself earlier this month by defending her title at the Monterrey Open with her defeat of Jankovic in the title match.
World Number 20 Nadia Petrova
Nadia Petrova of Russia is currently ranked World Number 20, giving her the position of eighteenth seed at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open in California. She did not take part in this event in 2009, when she cited injury as a reason for her withdrawal from the
Premier Mandatory tournament.
Petrova also took part in the 2010 BNP Paribas Open, where she was the sixteenth seed. Due to this, she received a bye in the first round and proceeded directly to the second round. She managed to defeat tennis pro Patty Schnyder in three sets, before ousting
Shuai Peng with a straight-sets victory in the next round. She made it to the fourth round of the tournament only to be defeated by current World Number one Caroline Wozniacki, who was seeded second at the event.
The player has been posting extremely mediocre results so far, with her two most recent tournaments being the Open GDF Suez and the Qatar Ladies Open. She fell to Jelena Dokic in the second round of the Paris event, and suffered another second round defeat
at the hands of reigning top player and first seed Caroline Wozniacki. If her poor form continues, she will probably suffer an early exit at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open as well.
