2011 BNP Paribas Open: Women’s Tennis Association seeds Part VI
This year’s BNP Paribas Open will commence on Wednesday, beginning with the women’s singles draw. This series aims to provide information about the 32 seeded players at the tournament and to provide a short analysis of their previous performance at the Indian
Wells event. It will also give a short preview of their potential for victory at the event.
World Number 13 Svetlana Kuznetsova
Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia is ranked 13 in the world and this makes her the eleventh seed at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open. She does not, unfortunately, have a great record at the Indian Wells tournament in recent years; the player did not participate in
the tournament in 2009. Although she was seeded first to the absence of Dinara Safina and Serena Williams in 2010, the player could not take advantage of her first round bye and fell to Carla Suarez Navarro in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 1-6 in the next round.
The tennis pro has won a total of two Grand Slam titles, and has appeared in four title matches. Along with this, she has also participated in the end-of-year WTA Championships five times. Her first Grand Slam win in 2004 made her the second Russian woman
after Anastasia Myskina and Maria Sharapova to win a Major title.
Kuznetsova has been performing erratically lately and her results are either extremely good or extremely poor. She managed to reach the fourth round of the Dubai Tennis Championships, defeating players like Agnieszka Radwanska and Flavia Pennetta. However,
she suffered a first round defeat at the hands of Shahar Pe’er in the Qatar Ladies Open.
World Number 14 Petra Kvitova
Petra Kvitova is a Czech tennis pro, who is currently ranked World Number 14. She is seeded twelfth at this year’s BNP Paribas Open. The player has participated at the Indian Wells Tournament consecutively in the last two years, although her results have
always left something to be desired. She participated in both the 2010 Premier Mandatory events and managed to reach the second round of both the BNP Paribas Open and the Sony Ericsson Open.
Her performance at the 2009 BNP Paribas Open was much more satisfactory, with the player reaching the third round of the Indian Wells tournament before falling to eventual champion, Vera Zvonareva, in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
Kvitova has been making significant progress lately, reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open before falling to Zvonareva. She also won her second title of the new season by defeating Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters in straight sets. However,
she went down to Ayumi Morita in the first round of the Dubai tournament.
The next article will provide an evaluation of the next two seeds.
