2011 BNP Paribas Open: Women’s Tennis Association seeds Part X
World Number 21 Ana Ivanovic
Former World Number 1 Ana Ivanovic is seeded nineteenth in this year’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. She posted impressive results at the tournament three years ago, when she ousted her competition to win the 2008 title.
However, the Serbian pro has been unable to reproduce this result since then. She took part in the tournament in 2009 as the defending champion, making it to the finals of the Premier Mandatory event once again before giving up her title and her points to
compatriot Vera Zvonareva.
At the 2010 BNP Paribas Open, Ana Ivanovic was nothing short of a disaster. She lost her first match at the tournament to Anastasija Sevastova, who was World no. 63 at the time. This was her fourth straight defeat that year, and it resulted in a massive
loss of ranking points. As a consequence, her ranking dropped below the Top 50 players for the first time in half a decade.
Ivanovic recently played in the Dubai tournament, where she was ousted by Patty Schnyder in the first round. She cited injuries as the reason behind her loss, saying that the abdominal injury she sustained in the beginning of the year had a big impact on
her performance. This resulted in her withdrawal from the Doha event. She is not defending any points at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open.
World Number 22 Aravane Rezai
Iranian player Aravane Rezai, who plays for France, is seeded twentieth in the 2011 BNP Paribas Open. She has participated at the Premier Mandatory event four times before, appearing in the tournament consistently since 2007.
In 2009, she could not apply for the event as a main-draw entry and was forced to play in the qualifying rounds, which she lost in the round of the last 32.
Her best performance at the Indian Wells event was in 2010, when she was ranked World no. 21. She received a bye in the first round of the tournament, and defeated players such as Tamarine Tanasugarn and Francesca Schiavone to reach the fourth round. She
was ousted by Elena Dementieva in straight sets at this stage of the event.
Rezai has shown the ability to play very well in the past, defeating players such as Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova, Dinara Safina, Caroline Wozniacki, Ai Sugiyama, Victoria Azarenka and Venus Williams. If she can stay focused, she is likely to deliver
good results.
