2011 BNP Paribas Open: Women’s Tennis Association seeds Part XIII
The BNP Paribas Open starts later today, and this article aims to give a brief intro to the seeded players. As the draw was revealed before new rankings were issued, there is some discrepancy in the seeding; however, the tournament has chosen to stick to
the original seeds.
World Number 27 Dominika Cibulkova
Slovakian tennis pro Dominika Cibulkova has been part of the Women’s Tennis Association [WTA] Tour since 2004, and this year will be the fourth time that she takes part in the BNP Paribas Open. The player is currently World Number 27, and is seeded 25th at
the tournament in California.
Cibulkova was, as World Number 16, a seeded player at the Indian Wells tournament in 2009. She received a bye in the first round, and took part in the second round only to be upset by Spanish tennis pro Nuria Llagostera Vives, who was World Number 121 at
that time.
Dominika Cibulkova took part in the 2010 BNP Paribas as a seeded player once again, although her ranking had slipped to World Number 29 at this point in time. She received another bye in the first round, but was eliminated in the round of the last 64 by
Italian tennis pro and World Number 49 Sara Errani.
Cibulkova has suffered straight-sets defeats in her first matches at the BNP Paribas Open for two years in a row, and is not likely to have improved much over the past year. Her most recent tournament was the Doha event, where she was ousted by Russian tennis
pro and second seed Vera Zvonareva in straight sets in the second round.
World Number 31 Daniela Hantuchova
Daniela Hantuchova is another Slovakian player who has been on tour for many years, having joined the WTA Tour circuit in 1999. She has participated in the Indian Wells event almost consistently since 2001, withdrawing just once in 2006.
She qualified for the event in 2009 as a seeded player, becoming the thirtieth entry as World Number 35. She received a bye in the first round and proceeded directly to the second round where she defeated Belgian tennis pro Yanina Wickmayer. After this,
she moved on to the second round to oust Czech pro Petra Cetkovska in straight sets. However, her run at the event ended after 23rdseed Sybille Bammer defeated her in the third round.
Her most recent showing at the tournament was in 2010, when she qualified as the 21st wild card at World Number 22. As usual, she received a bye in the first round and proceeded directly to the second round. Here, she was upset by Italian pro
Roberta Vinci in straight sets.
The player posted good results at the Doha event, making it to the quarterfinals of the tournament before being defeated by Russian World Number 3 Vera Zvonareva.
