2011 BNP Paribas Open: Women’s Tennis Association seeds Part XVI
The last part of this series concludes the WTA Seeds series for the 2011 BNP Paribas Open, rounding off the top players in the tournament with the last of the 32 seeds.
World Number 34 Klara Zakopalova
Klara Zakopalova is a Czech tennis pro who has been part of the Women’s Tennis Association [WTA] Tour for over ten years, having joined the circuit in 1999. She has been playing in the Indian Wells tournament almost consistently since 2002, only skipping
the event in 2005. This year, she has been seeded 31st at the event.
Zakopalova took part in the BNP Paribas Open in 2009, and qualified as a direct entry participant in the first round. She was ranked World Number 83 at this time. The Czech player only made it as far as the first round, when she was ousted in straight sets
by then-World Number 83 Kristina Barrois of Germany.
She participated in the tournament once again next year, when she was ranked World Number 86. The Czech pro was forced to play in the qualifying rounds, where she was upset by then-World Number 116 Michelle Larcher de Brito in three sets in the first round.
She has only been seeded once before at the event, in 2006. She received a bye in the first round as the 16th seed at the event, but was defeated by American pro Vania King in the second set.
The player performed well at her last tournament in Doha, making it past the qualifying rounds and joining the main draw. She defeated players Alexandra Dulgheru and Australian Open finalist Li Na before falling to BNP Paribas title defender Jelena Jankovic
in the quarterfinals. If she keeps up this performance, Zakopalova may make progress at the Indian Wells event.
World Number 35 Julia Goerges
Julia Goerges is a German tennis player who concludes the seeds at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open as the 32nd seed. She joined the WTA in 2005, and has been playing professionally for almost six years.
Goerges has participated in the Indian Wells tournament for three years in a row, starting in 2008. She took part in the qualifying rounds of the tournament in 2009, when she was ranked World Number 113. However, the German pro could not make it past the
first round and was overthrown by then-World Number 138 Evgeniya Rodina.
Her last experience with the tournament was last year, when she was ranked World Number 69. She played in the main draw of the tournament, upsetting Lucie Safarova in the first round. Goerges was, however, ousted by thirteenth seed Yanina Wickmayer in the
next round.
The player has not been posting very good results in the last month or so, and was upset in her first round at the Monterrey event. Her performance at the 2011 Indian Wells event is up for grabs, although pundits are predicting a loss in the second round.
