2011 BWF World Championships: Kevin Cordon displays phenomenal performance in Men’s Singles category
Guatemala’s talented shuttler, Kevin Cordon delivered a phenomenal performance in the Men’s Singles category at the 2011 BWF World Championships, which took place at Wembley Arena in London, from August 8-14. He stunned the world by beating some top shuttlers
and stormed into the Men’s Singles quarter-final, where he lost to the World Number One and Top Seed of Malaysia, Lee Chong Wei, who was the eventual silver medallist of the mega event.
In his opening match in the Championship, Cordon stunned the Chinese team when he thrashed Chen Long of China and made his presence felt to the top shuttlers in the event. Cordon, who is currently World Number 25, showed no respect to the World Number Three
Chinese shuttler and bagged his best victory in the World Championships.
It was a wonderful match where Chen Long, who was one of the main shuttlers in the event, failed to get rid of Cordon who was playing surprisingly perfect badminton. The Guatemala’s shuttler proved his worth and emerged as the winner in a thrilling rubber-set
fight with the score of 21-19, 8-21 and 27-25.
In the Men’s Singles second round, Cordon was up against Henri Hurskainen of Sweden. The Swedish played well in the match but Cordon was at the top of his form and finished-off the match in straight games. Guatemala’s shuttler played quite confidently against
the Swedish, who played well but not good enough to get rid of his challenger. Cordon bagged the second round match with a 21-19 and 21-17 score on the board.
In the Men’s Singles third-round battle, Cordon was competing against the talented and in-form shuttler, Pablo Abian of Spain. The Spanish is currently enjoying a respectable world ranking by occupying the 21st spot in the Men’s Singles category.
It was a wonderful three-game fight between the two emerging shuttlers at international level.
The opening set was breath-taking, as both players were delivering a wonderful performance by playing with aggression and speed. However, Cordon managed to win the fight at the end with the score of 21-19. The second game was also interesting, when both
shuttlers again remained close until the concluding phase of the game where Cordon lost the set with a narrow difference of 19-21.
The final set was absolutely wonderful for the crowd, as Cordon showed his class and thrashed his rival to win the game with a 21-17 margin. The overall result of this match was 21-19, 19-21 and 21-17. In the quarter-final, Cordon was facing the best athlete
in the world, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, who is currently World Number One. Cordon played well but not enough to shake the top seed, who won the battle with a 21-7 and 21-13 margin.
However, the overall performance of Cordon was phenomenal, which has brought him in the limelight of elite shuttlers in the world of badminton.
