2011 Betfred.com World Snooker Championship boosts Sheffield economy by 2.4 million pounds
The council of the city of Sheffield has revealed that this year’s Betfred.com World Snooker Championship has boosted Sheffield’s economy by 2.4 million pounds because of the many people that flocked to
the city from different corners of the world.
The tickets sold this year have beaten all previous records. Moreover, in this year’s World Championship the seats for the last 15 sessions were already booked before the event even started. Similarly,
the hotels, restaurants and shops were also all packed during the event.
The mega event had a final between John Higgins and Judd Trump, which was a one of a kind match. The Bristolian Ace potter, Trump, become the second youngest player ever to reach a Crucible final – since
Stephen Hendry in 1990. However the Wizard of Wishaw, Higgins, on the same note became only third player after Stephen Hendry, who has won seven, and Steve Davis, who has grabbed six, to win more than three World Titles.
The epic final was watched by almost 800 million people around the world. In the UK, as per the BBC, the viewers for the final match were almost 5.3 million.
Apart from the Crucible Theatre which was fully packed, the stats presented say that two million people were glued to their televisions during the afternoon session, which means a 19.4 percent of the total
viewing audience. Meanwhile for the evening session the viewing figures for the match were almost 3.9 million, which means a 15.5 percent share of the total viewing audience and a peak of 5.3 million.
Sheffield Council leader, Coun Paul Scriven, said, “It’s been another excellent year, leading up to what can only be described as classic final. Sheffield is of course proud to be home of World Snooker.”
He added, “The tournament brings around about £2.4m to the local economy and I’m delighted that Sheffield has been confirmed again as the host for the next four years. We’ve worked hard to showcase Sheffield
as a city and I think Sheffield is finally getting the national and international recognition it deserves.”
Crucible Theatre in Sheffield has been hosting the Snooker Championships since 1977.
