2011 Brisbane International: Benjamin Becker upsets third seed Fernando Verdasco
The professional tennis ace from Germany Benjamin Becker upset the third seed foe Fernando Verdasco of Spain in three sets at the 2011 Brisbane International tournament on Tuesday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-3.
The 29-year-old who made his debut on the ATP tour back in 2005 is currently ranked number fifty three in the South African Airways ATP list. The right hander is playing at the Brisbane International as his first competition since
his appearance at the BNP Paribas Open in Bercy where Benjamin couldn’t go beyond the second round as he was bundled out of the event at the hands of Gael Monfils. He posted his first round victory against Denis Istomin in straight sets. He finished the 2010
season with a win loss mark of 29-31 on the tour.
His other year highlights include semi final showings at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, the Ordina Open in 's-Hertogenbosch as well as the Thailand Open in Bangkok. At the major events in 2010, Becker advanced into the second round
of Australian Open, Wimbledon as well as the United States Open in New York. The only Grand Slam event where the German couldn’t post a single victory was the French Open as he was crushed by Gael Monfils in the opening round.
In his match against Fernando in the morning, the German tennis sensation started off strongly and looked extremely confident and thus wrapped up the first set within no time at 6-1.
Fernando after losing the opening set improved his game in the next and put up a good fight, however, in the end he did not prove strong enough against the aggressive game of Becker.
After Verdasco leveled the score at a set apiece, the German secured a lead of 3-0 in the decisive set before eventually emerging victorious in the end. The battle concluded in a time period of two hours and thirteen minutes. Verdasco
who is currently ranked number nine in the world only converted a single out of his seven break point opportunities.
World number 53 Becker, as a result of this victory, has improved his career record to 6-17 against the top ten players on the tour. His previous top ten victory also came against Verdasco at the Thailand Open back in September.
