2011 Brisbane International: Florian Mayer topples Bernard Tomic
World number 37 Florian Mayer overpowered Bernard Tomic in two sets during the opening round of the 2011 Brisbane International at Pat Rafter Arena on Monday. The final match score was 6-2 6-2. This is the third occasion that Tomic
has been bundled out of the Brisbane event in the opening round.
The eighteen year old rising tennis star was crushed by his German foe in only fifty three minutes of play.
Todd Woodbridge, who is the head of tennis Australia men’s side while commenting on Tomic’s game after the match said, "A lot of it has to do with anxiety. He has more figidity than I have ever seen him.”
As a result of this loss, Tomic’s chances of getting a wild card into the main draw of the year’s opening Grand Slam, the Australian Open, have also reduced. He had been desperately looking to begin the 2011 season on a high note
after a controversial end to the last year.
The 27-year-old Mayer, on the other hand, is coming off a descent season on the tour in 2010. He made his way into the fourth round of the Australian Open before eventually falling at the hands of Juan Martin Del Potro in a total
of four sets. At the grass court Grand Slam tournament in London, the German tennis ace got the better of eleventh seed Marin Cilic in two sets to make his way into the second round where he surpassed Mardy Fish in four sets. The right hander afterwards was
defeated by Lu Yen-hsun in the third round. At the Shanghai Rolex Masters in China, Mayer fell to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the round three after posting victories over Mikhail Youzhny and Kevin Anderson in the opening two rounds.
His other season highlights include runner up effort at the If Stockholm Open, semi final appearances in Hamburg and quarterfinal showing at the Mercedes Cup.
Another Australian, Marinko Matosevic will also play his match later in the day against the world number eight Andy Roddick from the United States of America.
Marinko, who is currently ranked number 138, is the third highest ranked Australian player on the ATP tour however he will have to play the match of his life in order to get past the second seed Roddick in Brisbane.
