2011 Brisbane International: Lucie Safarova bundles out second seed Shahar Peer
The 23-year-old Lucie Safarova from Czech Republic stunned the second seed Shahar Peer at the 2011 Brisbane International in three sets, on Tuesday. The final match score was 3-6, 6-1 and 7-5. The battle concluded in a time period
of two and a half hours.
Both of them had previously played on three occasions on the WTA tour with Shahar leading the head to head series with 2-1. During the start of the decisive set, it looked as if Peer was on her way to another win, earning a lead
of 5-2, however, Lucie finished strong in the end. She took ten of the last eleven points to upset the world number 13, Shahar of Israel.
"Shahar is a fighter and the match was very long. In the end, it could have gone either way. I am very happy to win this match. It is nice to perform so well right before the Australian Open. I worked very hard in the off-season
and I am happy to play these kinds of matches right now,” said Lucie of her opponent after the match.
She has now triumphed in four of her past six clashes versus the top fifteen contenders on the tour.
While commenting on her current form, the 23-year-old Lucie from Czech Republic said, "I am happy I am playing this kind of tennis now. My goal this year is to be in the Top 20. I am going to work hard to get there."
Meanwhile, the fifth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also posted another victory against Bojana Jovanovski in two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 7-5. She blasted a total of ten aces to get past her foe. The right hander dominated
Bojana particularly as a result of her superior quality serve throughout the match. Anastasia is currently the highest ranked teen in the world whereas Bojana the youngest in the top 100 rankings.
In the only other round two clash, the top seed Australian Samantha Stosur took on Jarmila Groth in a night clash. In the final opening round battle, Christina McHale was beaten by Roberta Vinci in two sets. The final match score
