2011 Brisbane International: Matthew Ebden upsets eighth seed Denis Istomin to reach the quarters
The Australian tennis ace Matthew Ebden has knocked out Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in two sets, on Thursday. As a result of this victory, he made his way into the quarterfinal round of the 2011 Brisbane International Men’s singles
tournament. The final match score was 6-4, 6-4. The battle was stretched to a time period of seventy three minutes at Pat Rafter Arena.
Matthew, who is currently ranked number 196 in the world, stunned the eighth seed Istomin with his superior and more dominant game play.
The 23-year-old Mathew opened his account in Brisbane on Monday, beating John Millman of Australia in the opening round. The final score line was 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Last year, he ended his tournament campaign in the second round as
he bundled out of the event at the hands of Richard Gasquest in straight sets.
The 1.88 meters tall has improved his game a great deal in 2010 as he also achieved his career high ranking of world number 162 last year during the month of August.
Matthew, who currently resides in Perth also made a huge upset at the Brisbane International last year in his opening round match against Jurgen Melzer by beating him in two sets.
By virtue of this victory, the Australian tennis ace will next take on the either Robin Soderling of Sweden or German Michael Berrer.
In the women’s side, former grass court Grand Slam finalist Marion Bartoli hammered down Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of Czech Republic to confirm her berth in the semi-final round on Thursday. The final match score was 6-2, 6-1.
While commenting on her preparations for the upcoming Grand Slam, the Australian Open, Bartoli said, "It is a great start to the Australian summer. When I played well two years ago I also had a great run at the Australian Open,
making the quarterfinals so I am looking forward to playing a good match and of course keep it going for the Australian Open. I worked really hard during the off-season, spent some time here during the rainy days on the Gold Coast and I think it helped me
to get through today as well.”
She will fight for a final spot with the winner of the match between Andrea Petkovic and Jarmila Groth.
