2011 Brisbane International; Robin Soderling surpasses Michael Berrer; reaches the quarters

World number five Robin Soderling of Sweden swept aside Michael Berrer of Germany at the 2011 Brisbane International tournament in two sets on Thursday. The final match score was 6-3, 7-6(7). The Swede, as a result of this victory, has also made his way into
the quarters in Brisbane.
He will take on Matthew Ebden in the Final Eight Round for a spot in the Semis on Friday. The right hander previously reached the quarters in Brisbane back in 2009 before losing at the hands of Radek Stepanek.
Matthew, who is a qualifier from Australia, advanced into the quarters after getting the better of eight seed Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in straight sets. The final score line was 6-4, 6-4. This has been his career best quarterfinal run at the Brisbane
International.
When commenting on Soderling, the Australian said, "Robin speaks for himself. He is five in the world. He has been in the finals of slams. He has beaten the best there are out there. If ever there is a time I need to test my skills, it is against a guy like
that.”
Soderling blasted a total of nine aces on his way to victory against the German on Thursday.
“It was tough today. Two sets, but they were both really close and I had to save some break points in the first set. The second one was really close and I was lucky to win this match in two sets. I had to fight a lot to win this one.  Tie-breaks are always
a little different. You have to stay very focused. He came up with some good stuff in the tie-break but I still managed to win it,” reflected the former world number four after his victory.
Soderling started the match confidently and had no serious problems in sealing the opening set at 6-3. After losing the first set, Berrer did not lose hope and further improved his game to put up a good fight before eventually losing the match. The Swede
prevented a total of two break point chances against Berrer before wrapping up the battle.
