2011 Brisbane International: Samantha Stosur makes her way into the second round
Top seed and world number six Samantha Stosur got the better of Lucie Hradecka, a qualifier from Czech Republic, in two sets to make her way into the second round of the 2011 Brisbane International on Monday. The final score line
was 7-6, 6-1.
The professional tennis ace from Australia, who made her debut on the WTA tour back in 1999, did not start off the match strongly as she found herself down at 4-1 in the first set. The right hander however did not lose her focus
and bounced back into the match with a win in only ninety minutes of action.
It looked at one stage that the 2010 French Open finalist Stosur might lose to a contender ranked outside the top 100 on the very first occasion since the 2009 United States Open, however, the Australian did not let that happen.
After trailing behind 4-1 in the opening set, she settled her nerves and found her form, forcing a tiebreak, which she won at 7-1.
The Gold Coast resident, who can come back to number five in the world with a semi-final showing in Brisbane, punished her foe in the second set, dominating at the baseline and continuously baffling Lucie with the help of her lethal
kick serve. She took the decisive set in only twenty seven minutes.
By virtue of this win, Stosur will now take on her compatriot fellow Jarmila Groth in the round two on Tuesday. Both of them have spent much of the time together during the summer training camp in Brisbane. Groth made her way into
the second round after brushing aside Spain's Arantxa Parra Santonja in two sets on Sunday. The final match score was 6-2, 7-5.
Another Australian, who will be in action on the centre court this afternoon, is the wild card entrant Bernard Tomic who will meet the seventh seed German Florian Mayer.
Elsewhere, Sophie Ferguson suffered an early round exit at the hands of Shahar Peer from Israel in straight sets with a score line of 6-4, 6-2.
