2011 Brisbane International Tennis Tournament: Germany's Andrea Petkovic makes it through to final
Andrea Petkovic of Germany stormed into the Women's singles final of the 2011 Brisbane International Tennis Tournament defeating Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli 6-4 in the first set and 6-2 in the second set to eliminate the professional
from the championship. Next, Petkovic will be opposed by practice partner Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in the finals. Kvitova got through with Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, beating her 6-4, 4-6 and 6-2.
"I'm a diesel, I need time to get going, so I wasn't moving perfectly in the beginning. Marion put a lot of pressure on with her returns and I needed some time to get used to that. But later I felt really good, I was moving well,
I was hitting the ball well," said Petkovic.
Bartoli got off to a good start, breaking Andrea twice to lead 4-1 in the first set. However, it was only a matter of time until the German fought back to even the score up to 4-4. Nonetheless, Petkovic held on to her serve and
went on to break Marion’s serve to take the first set.
Meanwhile, Petkovic dominated the second set only to take it 6-2 in 1 hour and 17 minutes in spite of the fact that Marion gave it her all.
On account of the loss, Bartoli said, "It's just one of those days when your opponent plays very well and on my side I was missing a little bit -- it happens. You just have to learn from it and go into your next match and try again."
Earlier, after defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the semi final match played between the two, Petra Kvitova stated, "I felt very good mentally at the start of the third set and I didn't have any nerves. I don't know if Anastasia
was tired but it was good for me. We practised together before the start of the tournament and we know each other well. We've played before and we are two-two, so it will be tough. I am looking forward to taking on Petkovic for the title."
