2011 Brisbane International: Wednesday Review for Women’s Singles Draw
Entering its fourth day of play on Wednesday, the 2011 Brisbane International’s remaining second round clashes for the women’s singles wrapped up with 5 professionals moving ahead to complete the quarterfinal line-up for the event.
With three second round clashes having been played on Tuesday, Jarmila Groth, fifth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Lucie Safarova had already secured their positions in the quarterfinals. Later, 5 more pros joined their ranks
at the end of play on Wednesday.
Kicking off the women’s singles action for the day was Petra Kvitova as she took on lucky loser Ksenia Pervak. Kvitova had joined the ranks of a seed killer on Monday when she defeated third seed Nadia Petrova.  Kvitova had ousted
the seed in a close, yet straight set victory. Pervak had gained acceptance into the main draw after Daniela Hantuchova pulled out of the event due to an injury in her left Achilles tendon. Playing her opening clash against compatriot Anna Chakvetadze, she
moved ahead after a twin set score victory of 6-2, 6-2.
Although Pervak managed a breadstick win in the first set, she lost her form into the second losing it 4-6 to Kvitova. Entering the decider, Kvitova rushed into the lead eventually clinching it 6-2.
Kvitova setup a quarterfinal clash with Dominika Cibulkova who moved ahead after defeating Roberta Vinci in a straight, yet not so simple, set victory of 6-2, 7-5. Cibulkova had earlier defeated Vinci’s compatriot Sara Errani by
straight sets in her opening clash. Vinci had defeated lucky loser Christina McHale after a hard fought opening clash. The latter had gained acceptance in the main draw after sixth seed Flavia Pennetta pulled out due to gastro intestinal illness.
Kvitova was joined in the quarterfinals by compatriot Barbora Strycova. Strycova had moved into the quarterfinals after defeating qualifier Anna Tatishvili by 7-5, 6-2 on Monday and then doing away with wildcard entrant Sally Peers
by 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday. The wildcard entrant had setup her second round clash after defeating seventh seed Alisa Kleybanova in a thrilling three setter.
Strycova goes on to play the only other seed remaining at the event, Marion Bartoli. Seeded fourth in the event, Bartoli played her second round match against Czech Iveta Benesova. Enjoying a breadstick win in the opener, Bartoli
lost her form in the second losing it 3-6. Nonetheless, she returned with full force in the decider securing a bagel win.
Bartoli had defeated qualifier Vania King in her opening clash while Benesova had met and defeated Polona Hercog.
Second round clashes for the day were wrapped up by Andrea Petkovic as she defeated local wildcard entrant Jelena Dokic. Petkovic had earlier defeated eighth seed Alexandra Dulgheru in straight sets. Serving three aces and losing
only twelve points on service, Petkovic coupled a breadstick and bagel win over the local despite the latter’s home court advantage. Dokic’s six double faults played to Petkovic’s favour.
Defeating Dokic, Petkovic setup a quarterfinal clash with top seed killer Groth. Groth had defeated Samantha Stosur on Tuesday to secure a spot for herself in the quarterfinals.
