The 2011 CAVB African Nations Women’s Volleyball Championship started off on Wednesday, August 17 as the beautiful city of Nairobi, Kenya, welcomed nine teams to the competition. Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Botswana and hosts
Kenya are on board to battle it out for top honours. The Confederation Africane de Volleyball (CAVB) held the drawing of lots on Tuesday and divided teams into two pools. The Technical director of CAVB Mrs. Howyda Mondy supervised the operations during the
drawing of lots. After the allotment of proper pools, teams settled down in the following order:
Pool A – Kenya, Cameroon, Egypt, and Nigeria Pool B – Algeria, Tunisia, Rwanda, Senegal, and Botswana
The idea of the African Women’s Nations Championship was first introduced in 1976 and Egypt was the first country to host the prestigious event. Then after a long break of nine years, the second edition of the championship was held in Tunisia. Afterwards,
the Confederation Africane de Volleyball (CAVB) organised the tournament with consistency. This year Kenya became the host of Women’s African Nations Championship. There is one prominent feature of the event that this edition of the championship is being held
in the holy month of Ramadan. Hence, the Algerian and other Muslims players will probably be fasting during the matches.
Algeria is defending the title this year. Besides Algeria, most of the teams in the competition have some sort of distinction. For instance, Egypt climbed up the top position in 2003 and took away the gold. Likewise, the Tunisian team is a runner-up in the
2009 Women’s African Nations Championship. Nigeria and Kenya also have medals. So far, Kenya has been the most successful team of the event as they hold six medals in the previous editions of the event.
The opening day of the tournament featured three matches as Kenya clashed against Nigeria in Pool A. Similarly, Pool B featured fixtures of Algeria vs. Senegal and Tunisia vs. Botswana. In the first match, Kenya took full advantage of familiar conditions
and defeated Nigeria in straight sets. In opening match of Pool B, Algeria proved to be too tough for Senegal. Tunisia clinched success in the third match of the day.
All three opening matches were played at Nazarene University in Nairobi, Kenya. After the first round, the semi-final matches are scheduled to be played at Brookhouse School. The winner of the 2011 CAVB Women’s African Nations Championship will earn a ticket
to play in the upcoming FIVB World Cup in Japan.
The president of the Kenyan Volleyball Federation, Mr. Aarab Touria, showed up on the opening day of the tournament and hoped the event in Nairobi would be a success.
