2011 CSV Men’s Volleyball Championship: Second day recap
The 2011 CSV Men’s South American Volleyball Championship started off with seven teams on Monday, September 19. The city of Cuiaba in Brazil greeted the participating teams and volleyball enthusiasts. On the opening day of the tournament Argentina, host
Brazil, and Colombia grabbed success. Argentina and Brazil dominated their competitors and recorded clean sweeps, while Colombia had a tough time overcoming the resilient rivals Venezuela in five sets. A total of three matches were played on Day 1 and the
second day also featured three matches. Argentina and Brazil kept their winning streaks going as Paraguay contested its skills with Uruguay and secured its first win in the tournament.
Match 1
Argentina 3, Colombia 0
The Day-2 of 2011 CSV Men’s Volleyball Championship was opened with a match between the two winning teams from the previous day. Argentina clashed with Colombia and finished with 3-0(25-18, 25-17, and 25-20). The Colombians failed to put up with the hard-hitting
of the Argentineans and dropped the match in straight sets.
The boys around head coach Javier Weber went straight into action and made a strong impact in the game via convincing serves by Luciano and Sole Sebastian. Colombian Faver Rivas demonstrated good net action and threw his hands up in the air on almost every
attack attempt from the opposite side. Andres Jimenez offered counter attacks but Argentina was all set to claim the set at 25-18.
As a result of the winning strategy of Argentinean coach, the team further progressed in the second set. They continued with convincing attacks and held off Colombia for a 25-17 win.
Colombia brought some changes in the third set, which proved helpful and they performed better against Argentina. However, Argentina refused to surrender and they remained on the winning track and dug up success after capturing the third set, 25-20.
Match 2
Uruguay 0, Paraguay 3
In the second match, Paraguay took on Uruguay. With one victory in hand, Uruguay worked out a great 3-0 win over Paraguay. It was indeed a point-to-point battled from start to end but Paraguay managed to earn the status of the better team. Paraguay claimed
the opening two sets with identical score of 25-22 and wrapped up the match by winning third set at 25-20.
Luis Riveros and Jose Ortiz played an instrumental role in Paraguay’s victory. They contributed 15 and 10 points, respectively. On other side, Renzo Cairus registered 12 points for Uruguay and he was the only player in his team to go into double digits.
Match 3
Brazil 3, Chile 0
Host and defending champions of the tournament, Brazil, scored a straight set win over Chile in the last match of the second day. They built up a score of 25-21, 25-19, and 25-10 in three consecutive sets. The Chilean squad started out with good energy but
gradually lost momentum. The Brazilian hotshots proved to be the better side and put an end to the match in 67 minutes. Brazil claimed a record of 2-0 at the end of the second day, while Chile struggled with 0-2 so far in the tournament.
