2011 CSV Men’s Volleyball Championship takes centre stage in Brazil
The 29th edition of CSV Men’s South American Volleyball Champions got the green light on Monday, September 19 in Cuiaba, Brazil. National volleyball teams from Argentina, Chile, host Brazil, Paraguay, Colombia, Venezuela, and Uruguay installed
their bases in the city to get the tournament started.
The event is scheduled until Sunday, September 25. Successful teams will earn the right to take part in the 2011 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Japan. The Brazilians are the defending champions as they defeated Argentina
in the final showdown of the previous edition of the tournament in 2009. Likewise, Venezuela finished third and settled for bronze.
The opening day of the tournament featured three matches and the same formula will be used for the remaining days of the event. The tournament will be continued for six consecutive days, while each team will appear in six matches. The ranking points will
be determined from the day-to-day match results. The Ginasio Aecim Tocantins sports hall in Cuiaba will host the full campaign of South American men’s teams.
Brazil has been the most successful team in the history of CSV Men’s Volleyball Championship. The Brazilian squad has seized 27 championship titles since the start of this event in 1951. The Argentinians come second on the list and have a less polished record
when compared to Brazil. Historically, Argentina has usually lost the final match to Brazil and finished second in the tournament. However, Argentina clinched success in 1964. Venezuela has finished in the second and third position but they have never been
able to climb up to the top slot. So is the case with rest of the teams. Brazil is the only team that has won the right to present South America in all major international events.
This time around, Brazilian squad is enjoying top form and they are tipped to win the ticket to 2011 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Cup in Japan. Brazil opened the tournament on Monday and claimed victory against Paraguay in straight sets. In other two matches
of the opening day, Argentina and Colombia grabbed success. They defeated Chile and Venezuela, respectively.
After the successful completion of the men’s competition, the 2011 CSV Women’s South American Volleyball Championship will start in the last week of this month. The Confederation South American de Volleyball (CVS) will be the sole organiser of the women’s
event, which will complete its run from September 27 to October 2. The Peruvian city of Callao will host the women’s championship.
In the women’s competition, teams from Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay will be on board to contest their game skills.
