2011 Canada Open GP runner-up Taufik Hidayat admits poor run of form this year – Badminton News
Indonesia’s Men’s Singles top shuttler, Taufik Hidayat, lost to Germany’s Marc Zwiebler in the final of the 2011 Canada Open GP, in Canada, on Sunday, July 24. After losing the final to the German, Taufik said that his game is going down this year, as he
has failed to produce an impressive performance this season.
The 29-year-old Taufik, who clinched the Men’s Singles crown at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2005 World Championships, has been struggling in the opening six months of this year. The World Number Four seeded Indonesian failed to defeat the lower ranked,
Zwiebler, in their previous two meetings which indicates that his game is going down gradually.
In the US Open Grand Prix Gold 2011, Zwiebler defeated the higher ranked Taufik in the quarter-final and now the German proved his worth by crushing the Indonesian in the title-match of the Canada Open Grand Prix.
The German won the final match after putting up a wonderful display of top-class badminton, as he finished-off the fight in straight games with the margin of 21-13 and 25-23. Zwiebler’s positive and winning run proves that he has improved a lot during the
last couple of years.
After losing the final battle to the German, Taufik said, “I congratulate Marc for his win but I have to say that my game has been going down this year.”
Taufik was the defending champion in the Canada Open, as he had clinched the 2010 edition of this event. However, he failed to defend his title against the in-form German, who delivered a stunning performance and defeated the Indonesian in the final.
Since the 2010 World Championships, where Taufik played the final and lost to Chen Jin of China, the Indonesian has been gradually losing form as he has failed to produce good performances in any of the Super Series events or the Premier Super Series tournaments.
Despite the poor performances in the recent past, a shuttler of the calibre of Taufik sure has the ability to pick his game and dominate again in the court. With the World Championships around the corner, the player will have to practice well to return to
form in the upcoming mega event.
