2011 Cellular South Cup: Vandeweghe, Zahlavova proceed to second round
Coco Vandeweghe defeats Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3, 6-2
American tennis player, Coco Vandeweghe, managed to defeat German World Number 159 in straight sets at the first round of the 2011 Cellular South Cup yesterday, proceeding to the second round of the tournament. Vandeweghe, who is 19 years old, took just
over one hour and seven minutes to defeat her 25-year-old opponent.
The match was in Vandeweghe’s hands from the beginning, although Groenefeld seemed to do her best to take over in the beginning of the opening set. However, the American player seemed to have no intention of giving up her lead; she challenged her opponent
to two break points and successfully converted one of them. Both players fired an ace each and made two double faults apiece, but Vandeweghe managed to take away 61 percent of the total points in the set. This gave her a definite advantage, and she began the
second set with an edge. By this time, Groenefeld was either disheartened or exhausted; the right-handed player seemed to give up halfway through and faced three more break points, out of which she was unable to save one. She did not score any aces, whereas
six of Vandeweghe’s points came from such expert shots. Thus, Vandeweghe wrapped up the match with a score line of 6-3, 6-2.
Coco Vandeweghe, who is yet to win a career title, has made it to third round of the tournament. She will either draw American wild card Catherine Harrison or Romanian doubles player Sorana Cirstea.
Sandra Zahlavova ousts Alla Kudryavtseva 7-6(8), 6-4
Czech tennis pro Sandra Zahlavova scored a tight victory over Russian pro Alla Kudryavtseva in straight sets, scraping through the first set to defeat the player 7-6(8), 6-4. Zahlavova took one hour and thirty-nine minutes to upset her opponent and qualify
for the next round of the tournament.
The first round of the match was a close set of volleys and forehands, and the action had spectators on the edge of the seats as both players returned each others’ shots with equal skill. World Number 69 Kudryavtseva managed to take over the match in the
first set, but Zahlavova caught up to her and turned the final game of the match into a series of set points before she won 7-6(8). The second set was relatively easier, as Zahlavova began to understand her opponent’s game better. She scored just two aces
throughout the match, but also won 33 of 56 points in the second set to win the match.
She will now compete against fellow Czech Republic pro, Lucie Hradecka, or American local player Julie Ditty in the second round of the Memphis event.
