2011 College Table Tennis National Championships: Table Tennis News
The National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) is going to inaugurate 2011 National Championships this weekend. The event is going to start today and will conclude on Sunday, 17 April. The event will be held at the Regional Recreational Sports
Centre, University of California Riverside, Minnesota.
There would be a total of 250 table tennis players competing for the title in the men's and women's singles and team events. The tournament is being staged after two years. It was earlier held in 2008 and 2009 in the same city, Rochester. This is one of
the most distinguished events for the table tennis players at the university level in America.
The NCTTA President, Willy Leparulo, said, “We were very pleased with Rochester’s hospitality, the facilities and resources they supplied in 2008 and 2009 and we’re excited to return to Minnesota for the 2011 championships.”
National championships play a vital role in developing of the sport in the country. They provide a ground for the players to flourish and prove their playing skills. Organising a national championship is not an easy task it requires proper planning and sorting
out of players from different levels in the country. The Rochester Table Tennis Club (RTTC) and the Rochester Community & Technical College (RCTC) team are supporting the Sports Commission in order to organise a successful event.
The RTTC is not only providing them with the technical support but has also provided the human resource needed for the championship. Pete Wottreng from RTTC is working as a championship coordinator for the tournament. He is helping the NCTTA to hire umpires
and score-keepers for the event.
The local teams will be the highlight of the tournament. The most prominent of them will be the RCTC table tennis team. They will be competing in the individuals and the team events.
The faculty advisor for table tennis of the RCTC, Mark Stanchfield, said, “I thought, ‘Why can't we have a team participating in this event?’ Now it’s time that hard work of two years pays off, I am very proud of our players and the RCTC Table Tennis Club's
commitment to promoting the sport of table tennis.”
Brenda Nguyen will be competing from the RCTC in the women's singles event. She will also feature in the team, doubles and mixed doubles events of the championship.
There will be teams from known universities participating in the championship. They are University of Florida, Georgia Institute of Technology, Harvard University, University of Maryland, Minnesota State University, Ohio State University, California State
University, University of Texas and Duke University.
The former champions, Lindenwood University and Texas Wesleyan University, are the power-house of table tennis in America. They will try to maintain their dominancy this year. This championship will play a key role in selecting players to represent the country
on international tournaments.
