2011 Davis Cup – Team Argentina: Juan Martin Del Potro, Argentina's top shot
Struggling through the year 2010 from his wrist injuries, Juan Martin Del Porto dropped down in world tennis ranking but managed to regain position in 2011 season. The Argentine had his highest career ranking at No.4 in January
2010. The former world number four has won nine titles in his seven year career. Starting his professional career in 2005, the Argentinean has won major titles and is considered to be an unpredictable player.
Starting tennis at the age of 7, Del Porto won his first match in 2004 as a senior at the age of 15. Del Potro is currently world No.19 in ATP world Ranking. He has a singles career record of 175-81. The Argentinean captured his
first ever Grand Slam Title in 2009 where he defeated the Maestro Roger Federer in the final and Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals.
Del Potro made his comeback in the current season. Having recovered from his wrist injury, the world No.19 struggled in the first two events of the season. He was knocked out in the second rounds of both the Medibank International
and the Australian Open. Entering the SAP Open in U.S.A, the Argentinean made a better effort and made it to the semi-finals but got knocked out by Spaniard Fernando Verdasco. The 22 year old also managed to make his way to the semi-final of the R.M.Keegan
Championship. Failing to perform his best he was again beaten by the American Andy Roddick in straight sets.
In the Delray Beach International Tennis Championship, Del Potro was the fan favourite. Playing true to his billing, he made his way to the final beating Ricardas Berankis, Teymuraz Gabashvili, Kevin Anderson and Mardy Fish. In
the final round, the Argentinean devastated his Serbian opponent, Janko Tipsarevic in straight sets winning the Delray Tennis Championship 2011.
After winning the Delray Beach International Championship, Juan made his mark in the Estoril Open in Portugal. The Argentinean took his revenge from the Fernando Verdasco and out stood him in a straight set win of 6-2, 6-2.
Looking at his performance in the Davis Cup altogether, Juan has played eight matches and managed to win six. Playing mostly on carpet, he has proved himself on all surfaces. His stats on clay and hard courts are more or less the
same.
The former world No.4 has had a perfect comeback. Juan has played 43 singles in 2011 and has won 34 out of the total. Most of his wins are on hard courts. Del Potro has improved his court movement, net play and probably added a
little to his serve as well. The forehand is coming around but he isn't as accurate with angles on his shots yet. Being more confident in his forehand accuracy he can add more pace and go for the lines and corners more. That’s the reason he's doing so well
in his comeback, however, he is nowhere near his best right now and can achieve a lot more.
