2011 Davis Cup – Team USA: Andy Roddick, the American stronghold
Andrew “Andy” Stephen Roddick is an American professional tennis player and also a former world No.1. The American is also the second highest ranked player in U.S.A after Mardy Fish. He is currently ranked at world No. 10 by the
ATP rankings.
Teammate to Fish, Roddick readies himself to compete in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 Davis Cup from 8th July to 10th July as Team USA meets Team Spain.
As per most of the American players, Andy is also knows for his powerful serve and also hold the record for the second fastest serve at 155 mph after Ivo Karlovic at 156 mph. Currently, Andy has the record of the fastest serve
in several tournaments including the fastest serve in Wimbledon at 141mph. The former world No. 1 became the singles Grand Slam champion when he won the US Open in 2003. Andy has reached to the Grand Slam finals four times but lost to the Maestro Roger Federer
all four times. His career boosted up when he became the No.1 junior tennis player in 2000 by winning the junior US OPEN and Australian Open.
Andy Roddick has unique playing style. The American serves around 120 – 160 miles per hour making it hard for the opponent to play. Despite his unreturnable serves, Roddick confuses his opponents with his off-forehand shots in
combination of his kicker out wide. The world No.10 generally aims for the corners to win him points. Being a top class player, Roddick has a variety of top spins, slices and angle in the rally to overcome his rival. He has also improved his game from playing
at the base line to all court. The serve-and-volley tactic gives the American a big advantage in the game. He uses this technique during the first and the second serve to pressurize his opponent.
The former world No.1 has been consistent regarding his performance this year. Reaching to the finals of most of the tournaments, the 28 year old former world No.1 has failed to win all of his competitions. Andy started his 2011
season in Brisbane International with a satisfying start but failed to win it as he lost to Robin Soldering in the final match. In the Australian Open, Roddick lost to the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka. In February 2011, he won the R.M.Keegan Championships beating
Milos Raonic.
Being part of team U.S.A, Roddick won the Davis Cup in 2010 and is again in the line-up against the Spaniards. His current records of Davis Cup, particularly on hard courts, are seemingly unmatchable. He has played 21 matches on
hard courts. Out of that he has won 19. Andy has yet to prove himself on clay courts in this season as he has lost more than he has won.
Looking at the figures for matches won in outdoor and indoor in the Davis Cup, the American has done comparatively better than most of the top 10 players, except for the top three. In indoor matches he has won 20 and lost only
4. Roddick has won 33 matches this season and lost only 11. Performing at his best, Roddick is determined to retain help Team USA move ahead in the Davis Cup.
