2011 Davis Cup – Team USA: Mardy Fish, Can he lead his team to victory
Ranked 8th in the world, American Mardy Fish headlines Team USA in the 2011 Davis Cup. Team USA is scheduled to play Team Spain in the quarterfinal round from 8th July to 10th July.
Having started his career in 2000 at the age of 18, he is well known for his fierce serves, forehands and outrunning his opponents in rallies. Since then the American has won many titles proving his ground on hard courts as well
as on clay. While he made his mark as the No.8 in world singles ranking, the 29 year old is struggling in the doubles ranking and is at No.48 in world.
Fish has mostly played his matches outdoors. His stats of outdoor matches are much better than indoor matches. He has managed to win 25 and lost 13 fixtures in 2011. The world No.8 sports an impressive career win loss mark of 114-93
The American started his 2011 season at the Brisbane International Australia. He did not go far enough as his tournament ended as he managed to clear the first round but was knocked out by Radek Stepanek in the second round 3-6,
1-6. Fish also had a hard time in the Australian Open where he was again knocked out in the second round, this time by Tommy Roberdo of Spain.
Following the season Fish managed to get to the semi-finals of the next two tournaments; R.M Keegan Championship where he lost to Milos Raonic of Canada 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 and in Delray Beach International Tennis championship to the
Argentinean Juan Del Potro 6-1, 7-5. Fish failed to make it to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open USA.
In the Sony Ericsson Open 2011, Mardy Fish won first three matches and made it to the semi finals where he lost to the current world No.1 Novak Djokovic. Fish claimed the top U.S. spot in men's tennis for the first time by reaching
the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open at Key Biscayne, Miami, when he beat No. 6 seed David Ferrer.
Fish also reached to the third round of the French Open but once again failed to qualify for the semi- finals as he was beaten by Gilles Simon in a 3 straight set win 3-6, 4-6 and 2-6. Fish also reached the quarterfinals of the
2011 Wimbledon for the first time after beating the 2010 finalist Tomas Berdych in straight sets but lost to former world number one, Rafael Nadal.
A novice at the Davis Cup, the American has a record of winning 9 matches and losing only 6. A number of wins have been on hard court but he has shown his best at clay during the year 2011. The ratio of hard court wins to clay
wins is 3 to 1. He has won 6 matches and lost only 3 on clay.
He has strongly made his mark through the years. Having dropped in the ranking below 50 in 2009 he gradually managed to come back up in the top 10. He is considered as the top shot for team USA in the Davis Cup as he lead his team
to victory in the 2010 Davis Cup and having the same strong team again this year, the American top shot is hoping to win it again.
