2011 Dubai Tennis Championships: Richard Gasquet through to round three
Frenchman, Richard Gasquet, battled it out against Ukraine's, Sergei Bubka, in the second round of the 2011 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship to make a place for himself in the third round of the tournament.
Gasquet got off to a good start, initiating the match with a 6-2 win in the first set. However, the professional had to work hard for the second set as Sergei led 4-1.
Nevertheless, the Frenchman bounced back to take the deciding second set 7-5, eliminating Bubka from the tournament, advancing to the following round.
Qualifier Bubka made it through to the second round upon defeating the number 5 seed, Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia 6-1 in the first set. The Ukrainian was up 1-0 in the second set, right after which, Ljubicic retired from the match due to a leg injury.
Meanwhile, Gasquet went head to head with Bulgaria's Gigor Dimitrov in the first round match played between the two. Dimitrov did not seem to have much to offer as the professional lost the first set 2-6 and the second set 4-6 to be sent home.
Furthermore, Richard will either be opposed by compatriot Gilles Simon or Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic in the third round of the tournament.
Simon defeated Russia's, Mikhail Youzhny, in the first round of his draw to proceed to the next round. Seeded 4 at the tournament, Youzhny lost 3-6 and 5-7 in straight sets. Alongside, Rosol was faced by qualifier, Karol Beck, of Slovakia. Beck was beaten
6-7 and 3-6 to be deleted from the championship.
Amongst those to have made it through to the third round was also Ukraine's, Sergiy Stakhovsky. Earlier, Stakhovsky defeated Latvia's Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 5-7 and 6-1 to proceed to the next round.
Sergiy will either face Swiss maestro, Roger Federer, or Spaniard, Marcel Granollers, in the third round.
Germany's Florian Mayer also made it through to the third round after having beaten Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev 6-3 and 6-4.
Mayer will either face compatriot, Philipp Petzschner, or, Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the third round of the 2011 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
