2011 English Greyhound Derby winner, Taylors Sky, already being considered for the 2012 Derby
The son of the two time English Greyhound Derby winner, Taylors Sky, brought back the 2011 English Greyhound Derby to the hall mark trainer, Charlie Lister. Sired by Westmead Maldini, the hound grabbed command of the first bend and was quick to leave behind,
Westmead Guru, who got right at the heels of the reeling in winner of the £75,000 Williamhill.Com Greyhound Derby final.
The hound from the dam, Rising Angel, was so ferocious and lethal on the track that he ended up breaking his own record. The audience at the Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium saw the thundering hound win by the enviable margin of 5 ¼ lengths and superbly time
the track distance in 28.17 seconds.
Taylors Sky became the Great Britain’s Dog Of The Year for landing a total of thirteen races out of a total of seventeen races. The hound was considered as the serious possibility for the 2011 English Greyhound Derby right after ten career starts. Now that
recognition of potential is something that might not have become the fate of most of the other hounds.
The three-year-old did not break the track record when racing for the final rather was as determined in the quarter finals too. He became the first dog in twenty-six years to break from the first gate and still win the race.
Owned by Steve and Becky Taylor, the hound already holds a 16 to 1 chance for the 2012 Derby and in case he does credit the honour against his name for a second time then he will become the fifth greyhound to have won the Derby twice.
"We're over the moon. This dog is still improving and there's more to come", commented the six-time Derby winning trainer.
Winning the 2011 Derby at Wimbledon was not the only reason for celebration for the proud trainer as that very year he also got selected for the New Year’s Honour List for the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE or OBE).
"I've had a good year with the finals we've won but I never dreamed I'd get anything like this - it's unbelievable”, he said.
"I thought it was a bit of a wind-up when I first heard about it but it's good for me and it's good for greyhound racing”, said Charlie Lister.
