2011 FIBA Americas C’Ship for Women Sep.28 Review: Mexico floors Paraguay; Cuba downs Chile – Part 1
Four games took place at the 2011 FIBA Americas Women's Basketball Championship on Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Here is a brief review of the games:
Mexico 87 – Paraguay 44
In the first game of the day, Mexico won their first game of the tournament in style - a 43 point (87-44) win over Paraguay.
Brisa Silva topped all scorers with 21 points. She scored all of her point from beyond the arc and ended on 7 for 14 shooting from three-point range. Erika Gomez recorded a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds and 19 points.
Abril Garcia also registered a double-double in the victory, adding 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Tamara Insfran led the Paraguayans with 12 points and eight rebounds. Johanna Ghiringhelli Parez punctuated 11 points, dished out four assists and grabbed four rebounds while Lida Noemi Fernandez Sanchez grabbed 10 rebounds in
the losing effort.
The Mexicans hit 29 for 77 (37.7 percent) from the field and limited Paraguay to only 16 for 77 (20.8 percent). Mexico was also dominant on the boards, grabbing 66 rebounds with the Paraguayans being held to 43.
Castro scored six of her points in the opening period as Mexico carried a 16-4 lead into the second. The Mexicans continued to post a strong defense in the second quarter and limited Paraguay to 13 points, stretching their lead
to 40-17 at halftime. Mexico then outscored Paraguay 47-27 in the second half of the game to bid adieu on a winning note.
Cuba 62 – Chile 42
In the second game, Cuba defeated Chile 62-42 and qualified for semi-final with second position in Group A.
Taimy Fernandez scored a team-high 13 points, grabbed four rebounds. The power forward ended the game on 6 for 15 shooting from the field. Clenia Noblet netted 11 points, scoring 7 for 8 from free throw line, and pulled down five
rebounds for the Cubans, who also got 10 points and 12 rebounds from Marlen Cepeda.
The Chileans were led by Javiera Novion, who scored a game-high 19 points, grabbed five rebounds, dealt out five assists and stole the ball twice. The player from Universidad Chile shot 6 for 17 from the floor and 3 for 4 from
the line.
The Cubans were 26 for 69 (37.7 percent) from the field, limiting the Chileans to only 15 for 54 (27.8 percent). They were in their zone right from the start and by the time the teams went into the break, the Cubans carried a 36-22
lead. Centre Cepeda scored 10 points in the first half. The Cuban domination ensued in the second half. They outscored Chile 15-7 in the third period and pushed their lead to 51-29, heading into the last quarter. The Islanders maintained their double-digit
lead in the fourth quarter and grabbed their third straight victory.
