2011 FIBA Asia Championship Cup Day-4 Roundup: Jordan’s ASU and Smart Gilas Pilipinas win (Part-1)
ASU 101 – WKL Dragons 77
On Monday night, the Applied Science University (ASU), the champions from Jordan, thrashed Malaysia’s WKL Dragons with a comprehensive 101-77 margin. By achieving the win, the Jordanian club not only announced their credentials
for the title, but also became the first team to clinch three straight wins in as many games in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship Cup.
Osama Daghles spearheaded Applied Science University with a tremendous all round performance and finished one assist short of a triple-double. Daghles landed a team-high 19 points, clutched 11 boards and dished out 9 assists to
stun the Malaysians.
Even Ariel Vanguardia, WKL Dragons’ coach was left impressed, “He really scattered us. But then this is one of the top teams in FIBA Asia. We did the best we could,”
Christopher Martin Ayer again led the Malaysian outfit. This time he nailed a game-high 21 points and gathered 12 rebounds. However once again there was nobody else in the Dragons team to lend a decent support.
ASU were in their groove right from the tip off and they repeatedly rattled the Dragons’ defence in the first half, at the end of which, the Jordanians were leading by 29. ASU continued the action in the third quarter and added
2 more points to their already substantial advantage. The KL Dragons however showed a little resistance in the final 10 minutes and canned some buckets in the garbage time to reduce the losing deficit time to 24 points..
Smart Gilas Pilipinas 74 – Duhok 64
On Monday night, the host Smart Gilas Pilipinas survived a vigorous mid-game resistance from the Duhok of Iraq and romped towards a brilliant 74-64 win, their third straight victory in the tournament.
Despite of Chester Jarell Giles remarkable performance, Duhok failed to capitalize on the opportunity and shot only 29 percent from the field, which turned out to be one of the major reasons for their demise even after a tremendous
comeback.
Giles racked up a game-high 20 points on the night and was even better on the rebounds grabbing 23 boards; however the rest of the team completely except Chudnay Earl Gray (17 points) failed to pick up the pace. Marcus Douthit
and Andy Mark Barroca were the frontrunners in the Smart Gilas line-up and led the team with 14 and 12 points respectively.
The Iraq team was trailing by 15 points in the second quarter when Giles took the charge aggressively and trimmed down the deficit to 2 points with 1:15 remaining in the third period. The Gilas however recovered quickly and nailed
some quick points early in the last quarter, racing away to a 10-point win.
