2011 FIBA Asia Championship Cup Roundup Day-3: Jordan’s ASU and Iraq’s Duhok win (Part-1)
ASU 79 – Al Ittihad 69
Applied Science University (ASU) of Jordan outperformed Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia in all of the four quarters of the game to wrap up a 79-69 victory on Monday. The Jordanian side posted their second straight win in the 2011 FIBA
Asia Championship Cup and now lead the group A with 2-0 record. On the other hand, the Al Ittihad faced their second loss of the tournament and slipped to a 1-2 record.
Mousa Alawadi was the man behind ASU success on the night. Alawadi racked up a game-high 26 points and clutched 3 boards to spearhead his team. Osama Daghles also showcased a versatile performance and nearly missed a double-double
with 14 point 9 assists and 5 rebounds.
Darren Keely was the top scorer for Al Ittihad. He shared a game-high 26 points, dished out 7 assists and gathered 6 boards. Adil Aljuhani erupted with 19 points for the Saudi’s, but the rest of the players failed to put up a decent
performance.
Keely headed out aggressively in the preliminary moments of the game and buried two scorching blows from beyond the arc to give his team an early lead. However, ASU responded swiftly and procured a single point advantage by the
end of the first quarter.
The Jordanians stretch their lead to as many as 8 points, deep in the second quarter, however Al Ittihad mounted a comeback to finish the first half, trailing by 2 points. ASU completely took control of the game in the second half
though. They turned up the heat in the last 16 minutes of the game and never relinquished their lead to race towards their second victory in a row.
Duhok 88 – WKL Dragons 76
Chester Jarell Giles powered Duhok with a game-high 28 points and 15 rebounds, leading the Iraqi side to an electrifying 88-76 victory over Malaysia’s WKL Dragons on Monday night. This was Duhok’s first victory of the tournament
and they improved their record 1-2 in the 2011 Asia Championship Cup. Qutaiba Al-Doori and Chudney Gray also posted 19 points apiece and provided a boost down the stretch.
Christopher Martin Ayer was the top scorer for the Dragons for the second time in as many games. The American college player notched up 22 points and clutched 14 rebounds for the Dragons while Shee Fai scored 14 points.
Despite of a competitive start, the Malaysians lost control deep into the first quarter, allowing Duhok to procure 15 points advantage. The Dragons however responded in the second quarter and managed to cut down the deficit to
2 points going into the halftime. Even though Martin continued to breathe fire for the Dragons after halftime however, due to lack of support the superstar failed to place him team on the frontline as Duhok sealed a comprehensive 12 point victory in the end.
