Italy and Cuba were featured in the second-week opener of the 2011 FIVB World League on Thursday, June 2, as Italy posted a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, and 27-25) victory over Cuba. The exciting match was hosted by the Cuban city of Ancona. The match spanned
over three sets and kept the crowd at the edge of their seats as the visitors out-played the home team in straight sets and added a third consecutive win to their count.
After the match, the head coaches and captains of both teams spoke about the match in front of the local and international media. The press conference was attended by both head coaches, skippers of both team and members of local organizing authorities.
The successful mentor of the Italian side, Mauro Berruto, was very satisfied with his team’s performance. He appreciated the team-effort and complimented each one of the players. The victory against the Cuban team was tagged as another beautiful success
for Italy. He said that the team has shown considerable improvements in all fields of the game. Attack was superb, serves were strong and defense was simply admirable. He urged his team to stay united and continue with success in the next matches, in order
to live up to the dream of playing in the Final Round. In the end, Berruto thanked the wonderful audience, who were a great source of inspiration for the team. The competition hall in Ancona had a majority of local fans but they did not hesitate to praise
the better play of the Italians. The head coach expressed his hearty gratitude for such good response.
The captain of Italian team, Cristian Savani also showed up at the conference and had his say. He was thrilled after posting a straight-set victory over the opponents. He said, “We couldn’t start better than this”. So far, Italian team has appeared in three
matches and they have not dropped even a single set. They have maintained a great run and high performances in all three matches, they have been featured in.
The head coach of Cuban team, Orlando Samuels, had the similar feelings about the loss of match. He commented, "Our team is composed of a lot of young players and due to this fact we made too many mistakes. We need more practice. We lost three important
players in the last week, but it was their decision."
The captain of the Cuban side, Wilfredo Leon, regretted the loss of an important match at home court. He acknowledged that his team made important mistakes at crucial times of the game. He said that they started very well but gradually lost momentum and
fell victim to the heavy strike of Italian side. Nonetheless, he promised a better performance in the next match on Sunday. He expected the local fans to come for their support and encouragement.
