2011 Family Circle Cup: Caroline Wozniacki versus Jelena Jankovic - Player Comparison
Caroline Wozniacki is currently ranked World Number 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association, a spot which she first reached near the end of last year. The player was made to give up the position briefly for current World Number 2 Kim
Clijsters, who soon descended to the second place after skipping several tournaments. The Danish pro has been part of the WTA Tour since 2005, and has already won fourteen career titles. She is only 20 years old.
Jelena Jankovic, meanwhile, has been part of the WTA since 2000. She is 26 years old and has spent over eleven years playing tennis as a professional. Currently ranked World Number 8, she has also spent some time as the Number
1, a spot she reached in 2008. The player hails from Serbia, and has won a total of twelve WTA career titles and one ITF title over the course of her career.
This year, Wozniacki has already nabbed two more titles for herself. She secured her latest win at the Pacific Life Open, defeating player such as Alisa Kleybanova of Russia, eighth seed Victoria Azarenka, former World Number 1
Maria Sharapova and Marion Bartoli to take the trophy home. Before this, she won her first 2011 title at the Dubai Duty Free Women’s Open by defeating Ayumi Morita, Shahar Peer, Jelena Jankovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final.
Jelena Jankovic, on the other hand, has not own any titles so far this year. She made it to the semi-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Women’s Open after undoing fourteenth seed Kaia Kanepi and Samantha Stosur of Australia, but could
not survive against Wozniacki herself. She also made it to the semi-finals of the Qatar Ladies Open, as well as the finals of the Monterrey Open. The player also put in a quarterfinal appearance at the Sony Ericsson Open, where Andrea Petkovic dismissed her
in three sets.
Wozniacki also put in a good showing at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, although her performance fell a little short of the standard set by many other World Number 1s. She made it all the way to the semi-finals
of the tournament, where ninth seed Li Na overthrew her to reach the title match. Jankovic, on the other hand, could not perform well at the Grand Slam tournament and went down to unseeded player Shuai Peng in the second round of the event.
Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic have played against each other five times in the past, with Jankovic winning four of the five conflicts to set up a head-to-head record of 4-1. However, Wozniacki defeated her in their most
recent meeting at Dubai this year, and is expected to repeat the performance this time.
