2011 French Open: Carlos Berlocq sails into the second round
Carlos Berlocq of Argentina outclassed the wild card entrant, Bernard Tomic of Australia in straight sets to advance into the second round of the 2011 French Open on Monday. He registered a 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 success at this Grand Slam
event which is held in Paris, France.
Berlocq completely outshined the 18-year-old Aussie at Stade Roland Garros on his first meeting in one hour and twenty-seven minutes. He hammered four ferocious aces and hit thirty-two winners. The Argentinean clobbered twenty-three
unforced errors to Tomic’s forty-six and clobbered less double faults which made the difference.
World number 69 Berlocq entered confidently at court 10 and smoothly held his opening serve in the first set. He produced a higher first serve share of 73 percent and registered an awesome 75 percent win on it. The Argentinean
failed to save both breakpoints faced but converted three out of six breakpoint opportunities to his advantage seal the deal in forty seven minutes with a 7-5 score line.
28-year-old is in poor shape this season and won only four out of his last ten matches. However, he got his game back at right time and carried his winning ways into the second set. Berlocq held his entire serves through blistering
forehands from his arsenal of skills. Berlocq produced an acceptable first serve share of 68 percent as compared to slightly lower of Aussie’s 65 percent and earned an amazing 88 percent win on it. He faced zero breakpoints but converted one out of four breakpoint
opportunities to his advantage to clinch the set with a 6-4 win.
The Argentinean raised his level of game in the final set and despite losing his serve early on, he broke the Aussie’s serve three times to pocket the set with an assuring 6-2 score line. Berlocq failed to save the only breakpoint
conceded but converted three out of eight breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to help win easily.
Tomic, ranked 180 in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings put up a great show but it wasn’t enough. He showed his top notch skills at Brunei and Caloundra Challengers where he made a semi-final and final berth but
his form dipped afterwards.
Up next for Berlocq is the winner of the match between eleventh seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, who won in Nice ATP event, and Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot. The Argentinean needs to improve his defensive skills if he wishes to
overpower a seeded player since he failed to save all three breakpoints faced in this match.
