2011 French Open: Caroline Wozniacki decimates Aleksandra Wozniak in the second round
Reigning world number one, Dane Caroline Wozniacki sailed past Canadian qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak in straight sets in her second round match at the 2011 Roland Garros in Paris, France on Wednesday. In a match that lasted a little over an hour, the top seeded Dane recorded a 6-3, 7-6(6) victory against the lower ranked Canadian.
Playing in her fifth French Open and seventeenth Grand Slam, Wozniacki is one of those few pros, ever to hold the top spot without ever winning a Grand Slam event. Her personal best at any Grand Slam event came two years back in 2009 when she made it to the final of the 2009 U.S. Open losing the title match to the Belgian mama, Kim Clijsters.
The Dane moved into the second round after doing away with Kimiko Date-Krumm in straight sets while Wozniak blasted away Junri Namigata in her opening round match. The pair meets for the first time here.
Wozniacki won the toss and opted to serve first. Moving along on an equal footing, the Canadian managed to keep the score tied for the six games. However, two lucky breaks in the seventh and ninth game, allowed the Dane to clinch a 6-3 win for herself in the opener.
Taking almost thirty nine minutes, Wozniacki capitalised on the Canadian’s sixteen unforced errors as she coupled that with her acceptable first serve winning percentage of 52 percent to go one up in the set score.
The second set progressed slowly for the fast paced Dane. The score ticked on even terms as both players continued to hold their serves plausibly. A neck-to-neck run between the two forced the set into a tiebreaker. The hard hitting Wozniak rushed into a 3-1 lead which she only extended to 5-2 after a couple of unforced errors from the Dane. However, a determined fought back hard as she reduced the deficit bringing the score to a level 6-6. A combination of a well placed winner from Wozniacki and an erroneous shot from Wozniak, allowed the Dane an 8-6 victory in the tiebreaker, sealing her straight sets victory.
Wozniacki moves on ahead to play either Sara Errani or Daniela Hantuchova in the third round.
