2011 French Open: David Ferrer moves past Julien Benneteau in straight sets in the second round
Spaniard number two, David Ferrer defeated local Julien Benneteau in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in his second round match at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris on Wednesday. Seeded seventh at the event, Ferrer is competing in the
second Grand Slam of the season, the 2011 Roland Garros.
Sporting a win loss mark of 18-8, Ferrer started his ninth run here playing Finn Jarkko Nieminen in the opening round. Losing only seven games in the process, Ferrer made his way into the second round securing a 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 victory.
Benneteau, on the other hand, bounced back from being one set down in the opener against Rui Machado to secure a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 four set win to advance at the event.
Trailing 2-3 in the career head-to-head, Ferrer was determined to outshine the local to tie the series 3-3. Opening serve in their sixth meeting on tour, Ferrer rushed to a 4-1 lead in the opener. Riding his form, Ferrer soon clinched
the first set 6-3 as he continued to win games on his service.
Although the Spaniard hit a meagre 57% on his first serve he managed to win an amazing 84% on it. Although Ferrer trailed in the number of winners (10-16), he managed to counter it by leading the number of unforced errors (6-11).
Carrying over his form into the second set, Ferrer rushed into a 2-0 lead which he only extended to 4-2 minutes later, having successfully broken the local twice. Although Benneteau managed to fight back as he reduced the deficit,
serving for the set at 5-4 Ferrer was able to clinch a 6-4 win for himself.
The Spaniard now led the set score 2-0 and was very well on his way to a straight sets victory.
An early break in the third set, allowed the Spaniard to lead the set 4-1. Serving for the set at 5-2, Ferrer hit a well placed winner to seal his victory at 40-0.
Clinching the final set 6-2, Ferrer sealed his straight sets victory against the local. He now moves on ahead to play Japanese star Kei Nishikori or Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky.
