2011 French Open: Iryna Bremond defeats Evgeniya Rodina in the opening match
A remarkable show of athleticism by the world number 139 Iryna Bremond of France, who added her first round victory to her repository by earning a comprehensive win over the Russian Evgeniya Rodina with a 6-3, 4-6, 8-6 score-line
and sailed into the second round of the 2011 French Open.
The Frenchwoman earned this victory in 160 minutes of play, as she hammered 36 winners and made the most of Rodina’s 38 unforced errors. Bremond mustered 54 percent of points on her first serve and converted ten of thirteen break
points. Bremond was exceptionally well during the process and concluded the match with three aces and 99 points in total.
The 26-year-old Bremond had an impressive start to the game, firing nine winners with 67 percent precision on first serve. She reeled off 13 of 24 of points on her first serve and put her Russian opponent under immense pressure.
Both players continued to struggle hard and held their serve in first six games to tie the score at 3-3, before Bremond stung the serve break to lead the first set with 6-3 score.
The second set followed an immediate shift in the momentum when the Russian bounced back, breaking the Frenchwoman twice on her way to a 4-0 lead. Bremond’s composure wavered along the way as she endured intense examination from
her Russian opponent. Rodina scored ten winners, while collecting 12 of 21 service points in the set. Both opponents went on to hold serve until the Russian player succeeded to tie the score at one set apiece.
The massive crowd at the Stade Roland Garros was curious to watch the final showdown, and the players did not disappoint. The resurgent Frenchwoman quickly rattled off a series of defensive shots which earned her another break
to go up with a 5-4 score. The pressure was back on Rodina’s shoulder as her opponent was back on track. Striking a forehand winner down the line, Bremond was able to conclude her first round victory with a 8-6 score.
Longing for spot in the finals, Bremond now moves on ahead to face Roberta Vinci of Italy in the second round of the tournament. Vinci edged past compatriot Alberta Brianti in the first round to continue her run at the Prestigious
Grand Slam tournament. Both players have never met each other at any of the WTA tour, so at the moment it’s not easy to predict that who might win. However, the French pro is holding all the aces right now and she should have no trouble getting into the second
round.
