2011 French Open: Janko Tipsarevic destroys Brian Dabul in the first round
World number 32, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, had a brilliant start at Roland Garros, defeating the unseeded Argentine, Brian Dabul in the opening round on Monday. Seeded 29 in the Grand Slam event, Tipsarevic wrapped up his straight
sets victory at 7-6(1), 6-1, 6-0, taking just two hours and five minutes to move on to the second round of the French Open.
Apart from the hard-fought opening set, the contest appeared pretty one-sided in the favour of the strong Serbian competitor. Tipsarevic took time early to get his eye in the game and had to settle the first set in a tie breaker
round but absolutely blew away the Argentine opponent in the following sets to ease out of the contest. He lost just one game in the last two sets, winning 11 games on the trot to register his 19th victory of the running ATP (Association of Tennis
Professionals) season.
27-year-old Argentine veteran hung in the opener for quite some time but lost his steam completely in the later parts of the game to end on the losing side. Dabul was led down in the game by his errant stroke play, as he spilled
out 36 unforced errors, including nine expensive double faults to bestow victory upon the Serb opponent.
Despite of a below par serve of just 52 per cent in the contest, Tipsarevic faced just three break points in the whole matchup. His points winning proficiency was phenomenal, as he secured 35 out of 44 first serve points and fired
nine cracking aces en route to victory. The Serb banged 39 winners in the matchup, while Dabul lagged far behind with a mere 19.
Intense tennis was witnessed in the opening set, with both men trying to get the better of their opponent. Dabul coughed seven double faults in set number one but still managed to nab two serve breaks to catch up with Tipsarevic,
who stung two break points earlier in the set. After the scores tied at 6-6, a tie breaker was enforced and Dabul’s game went into a drastic downturn from there onwards. The Argentine won just one point in the tie breaker before submitting the first set to
his opponent at 6-7(1).
Once bagging the opener, Tipsarevic never looked back and continued his demolition job in the next two sets. He took the second set 6-1 and then rocketed away to victory after taking the third set 6-0 to book a place in the second
round of the French Open.
Tipsarevic will take on Pere Riba of Spain in the next round, as the Spaniard outplayed Ivan Dodig in the opening round.
